Hackers Demand $70M in Bitcoin After Kaseya Ransomware Attack

Hackers were on Monday demanding $70 million in bitcoin in exchange for data stolen during an attack on a US IT company that has shuttered hundreds of Swedish supermarkets.

Researchers believe more than 1,000 companies could have been affected by the attack on Miami-based firm Kaseya, which provides IT services to some 40,000 businesses around the world.

The FBI warned Sunday that the scale of the "ransomware" attack -- a form of digital hostage-taking where hackers encrypt victims' data and then demand money for restored access -- is so large that it may be "unable to respond to each victim individually".

Sweden's Coop supermarket chain was among the most high-profile victims, with "a majority" of their 800 stores still closed three days after the hack paralysed its cash registers, spokesman Kevin Bell told AFP.

Coop is not a direct customer of Kaseya's, but its IT subcontractor Visma Esscom was hit by the attack.

Bell stressed that the situation was looking "positive compared to a few days ago", but the few hundred stores that have reopened were relying on alternative payment solutions, such as customers paying using their smartphones.

Experts believe the attack was probably carried out by REvil, a Russian-speaking hacking group known as a prolific perpetrator of ransomware attacks.

A post on Happy Blog, a site on the dark web previously associated with the group, claimed responsibility for the attack and said it had infected "more than a million systems".

The FBI believes that REvil, which also goes by the name Sodinokibi, was behind a ransomware attack last month on global meat-processing giant JBS, which ended up paying $11 million in bitcoin to the hackers.

The blog post claiming responsibility for the Kaseya attack said the hackers would post a decryption tool online "so everyone will be able to recover from attack in less than an hour" -- if they were handed $70 million in bitcoin.

Kaseya describes itself as a leading provider of IT and security management services to small and medium-sized businesses.

The company said Sunday that it believed the damage had been restricted to a "very small number" of customers using its signature VSA software, which lets companies manage networks of computers and printers from a single point.

But cybersecurity firm Huntress Labs said in a Reddit forum that it was working with partners targeted in the attack, and that the software was manipulated "to encrypt more than 1,000 companies".

Kaseya said it had "immediately shut down" its servers after detecting the attack on Friday and warned its VSA customers to do the same, "to prevent them from being compromised."

The company has released a tool allowing its customers to find out whether their own computer systems have been compromised by the attack.

- Russia-linked hackers strike again? -

In recent months numerous US companies, including the computer group SolarWinds and the Colonial oil pipeline, have been the victims of high-profile ransomware attacks blamed by the FBI on hackers based in Russian territory.

US President Joe Biden recently raised the threat in talks with Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin, and on Saturday he ordered a full investigation into the Kaseya attack.

While "the initial thinking was it was not the Russian government", Biden said, "if it is either with the knowledge of and/or a consequence of Russia, then I told Putin we will respond."

Loic Guezo, head of Clusif, a French association of cybersecurity experts, said the Kaseya attack bore a strong resemblance to last year's spectacular attack against SolarWinds, a software company.

But he added that it was unclear why the hackers were this time demanding such a massive sum of money, and suggested it may have been done with political objectives to put pressure on the Biden administration.

PSG Beat RB Leipzig To Reach Their First Ever Champions League Final

Paris St-Germain are through to their first Champions League final courtesy of a deserved victory over RB Leipzig in an entertaining semi-final in Lisbon.

One of Europe's biggest spenders, but also one of the continent's most high-profile underachievers on the grandest stage, PSG finally seized their opportunity courtesy of goals from Marquinhos, Angel di Maria and Juan Bernat.

The former, who scored the first of two late goals in a comeback win over Atalanta in the last eight, rose to head home a superbly delivered free-kick from Di Maria.

The Argentine forward then finished well from close range following an audacious flick from Neymar after Leipzig goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi had relinquished possession with a dire kick.

With the fit-again Kylian Mbappe and Neymar terrorising the Leipzig backline, the French side should have been out of sight before the break, but the latter twice hit the post - from a clipped finish then an opportunist free-kick from range - before side-footing another chance wide at the near post.

Prior to PSG's second, Yussuf Poulsen had Leipzig's best chance but fired wide after he was found by a Dani Olmo pull-back.

Bernat sealed the win in the second half with a header that Leipzig felt was offside but was legitimate as the prone Nordi Mukiele, who had slipped in the build-up, was playing the scorer onside.

PSG will find out who they face in Sunday's final when five-time winners Bayern Munich play Lyon in the other semi-final on Wednesday.

This is glorious, but nervous, virgin territory for PSG.

The vast sums of money pumped into the French club by owners Qatar Sports Investments since 2011 has enabled them to dominate domestically. In Europe, though, not so much.

In the three seasons prior to this one they exited in the last 16, and before that they went out in the quarter-finals four years in a row - results that ultimately cost managers Laurent Blanc and Unai Emery their jobs.

Thomas Tuchel, though, has found a way to break the glass ceiling, leading the side from the French capital to their first major European final since the Cup Winners' Cup in 1997, a year before Mbappe was born.

You cannot begrudge them it either on the basis of Tuesday's performance, which was calm, confident and incisive, in contrast to a nervy and often negligent display from their opponents.

The first and third goals gave Di Maria his 88th and 89th assists in all competitions since he joined the club in August 2015 - only Barcelona's Lionel Messi has more in Europe's top five leagues in that time.

He also now has nine goal involvements in the competition this season, surpassing the tally he managed in helping Real Madrid lift the trophy in 2013-14.

Neymar's brilliant assist took him to 23 goal involvements in 19 appearances for PSG (14 goals & nine assists) in the Champions League and while Mbappe's finishing was rusty, he was still able to regularly fashion chances for himself and others.

When this trio have started together this season, PSG have lost just one of 12 games. With them fully fit and firing, they will be a match for whoever they face in the final.

First look at PlayStation 5 with design, 'price and UK release date'

This is the first look at the PlayStation 5 as over a dozen games were revealed tonight to gamers.

Sony bosses remained tight-lipped on the console date and price which will be the first new PlayStation design in the series since 2013.

But they revealed a first look at the new console which shows a much more streamlined and futuristic look.

The new PlayStation 5 has gone through a complete colour change from black to white and each console will come with Grand Theft Auto V online.

What was announced
Sony is revealed a list of over a dozen games to be available for the upcoming console to demonstrate its specs and capabilities.

Sony Interactive Entertainment president and chief executive Jim Ryan said Thursday's event will show games which "represent the best in the industry from innovative studios that span the globe".

What games were shown?
Spider-Man: Miles Morales.

A new, black Spider-Man with a dark costume takes centre stage in Spider-Man Miles Morales.

A new Gran Turismo

Gran Turismo 7 was debuted with fantastic graphics.

Ratchet and Clank

A mind-bending platformer where you explore alien worlds, which is built for the PlayStation 5.

Project Athia

A dark, Tomb Raider-style adventure designed exclusively for PlayStation 5.

Stray

You seem to be controlling a cat in some post apocalyptic Japan where robots rule cities. To be released in 2021.

Returnal

A lost astronaut explores a dark alien world controlled by her nightmares and memories in a battle with her own sanity.

The first person shooter/adventure game looks to be a kind of Resident Evil meets alien

Sackboy - A Big Adventure

Sackboy seems to be a platformer where you jump around and collect things but in better graphics.

He doesn't speak so there's not much else to say about him really.

Destruction - Allstars

An explosive cut-scene showed people fighting and crashing monster trucks into each other around an arena.

It looks very much like Tekken vs Rocket League.

Kena - Bridge of Spirits

An adventure game where a young woman is on a quest to kill cartoon-like spirits.

Looks very much like Zelda

Oddworld SoulStorm

Abe the star of the original PS2 game Abe's Oddysee is back for an explosive ride with very impressive graphics.

Ghostwire Tokyo

It's up to you to save Tokyo and battle some of the scariest looking ghosts and demons in this supernatural thriller.

It looks like it may have VR elements built into it.

Jetf The Far Sure

It seems like you're in some kind of spaceship again and travelling across alien worlds with the hope of establishing a new colony.

Godfall

A medieval hack and slash platformer that's available at the end of 2020.

Solar Ash

This trippy, 2D adventure doesn't really make much sense. You're a robot who wakes up in this strange dimension with unusual music. The camera turns upside down a lot. It's coming out in 2021.

Hitman III - Death Awaits

The graphics are immense, almost film-like as you watch Agent 47 wander through woodland.

The new Hitman is coming out in January 2021 for the dramatic conclusion of the trilogy.

He's based in Dubai and this is definitely the most visually impressive game debuted so far.

Astro's Playroom

Another VR game made its debt as you control Astro in fictional land in this platformer.

Little Devil Inside

People with weird shaped heads are killing monsters to the sound of classical music in this cartoon game which doesn't really seem to amount to anything before climaxing with a giant 2D dragon battle.

NBA 2k21

Just when you think they can't improve the graphics of NBA games, developers manage it again.

Zooming in on the beads of sweat to show off the detail that has gone into this year's edition.

Bugsnax

A strawberry wanders around talking to his mates before a giant talking Australian walrus gulps him up then his arm turns into a strawberry to a catchy themetune.

This is mental.

Demon's Soul

Another Medieval hack and slash game but this time with much better graphics, looks a bit like Elder Scrolls.

Deathloop

Assassins are taking each other out in this futuristic first-person adventure game which looks very much like BioShock.

The Bethesda adventure shows the main character repeatedly being killed in dozens of different gory ways while being hunted by various characters. Before dying and starting again.

This could be the best one of the night. There's also a plot here but I'm not sure what it is.

Resident Evil 8

Be afraid. The graphics look absolutely incredible on this one and the sound seems like it will give you a nervous breakdown.

It's set to be released in 2021.

Pragmata

Time seems to be standing still as a man in a space suit desperately tries to save a little girl while satellites rain down on the planet.

Horizon Forbidden West

A young hero takes on nature and the earth in this impressive adventure platformer.

The tech specs revealed

The announcement confirmed that the PlayStation 5 will have 4K blueray compatibility and an Ultra High Speed SSD.

The PlayStation 5 introduces the Dualsense - which definitely looks more like an Xbox controller.

It has a slightly larger look and feel to the DualShock 4 with a two-toned colour design which contains haptic feedback to add "a variety of powerful sensations" and adaptive triggers onto the L2 and R2 buttons.

A PlayStation 5 spokesperson said: "Haptic feedback, which adds a variety of powerful sensations you’ll feel when you play, such as the slow grittiness of driving a car through mud. We also incorporated adaptive triggers into the L2 and R2 buttons of DualSense so you can truly feel the tension of your actions, like when drawing a bow to shoot an arrow.

"DualSense also adds a built-in microphone array, which will enable players to easily chat with friends without a headset – ideal for jumping into a quick conversation. But of course, if you are planning to chat for a longer period, it’s good to have that headset handy."

PlayStation 5 UK Release Date
The UK release date is expected to be towards the end of this year, shortly after or at exactly the same time as it goes on sale in the US.

Price
Rumours suggest the PlayStation 5 may retail at £599.99, according to screenshots of an amazon posting put on Reddit.

While the actual price has not been confirmed, it is thought to be around this level, if not slightly cheaper.

The PlayStation 5 is due to be released at the end of this year, around the same time as rival Microsoft's own next-generation console, the Xbox Series X.

It means the console is likely to be available in time for Christmas.

Nigeria Federal Govt May Sell Public Assets To Fund 2020 Budget

Indications have emerged that more public assets may be put up for sale by the Federal Government as the Bureau of Public Enterprises reviews the 2020 Privatisation Work Plan.

Checks by our correspondent revealed that work on the review of the privatisation work plan is ongoing. The revised 2020 budget has a deficit of N5.37tn.

Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Mrs Zainab Ahmed, had said the Federal Government intended to finance the deficit through domestic and foreign borrowing, as well as proceeds from privatisation of public assets.

Our correspondent learnt that the BPE is reviewing the 2020 Privatisation Work Plan. The review of the work plan was informed by the drop in the projected revenue that will accrue to the Federal Government within the year.
Director General of the BPE, Mr. Alex Okoh, confirmed the ongoing review of the privatisation work plan to our correspondent on Thursday.

Responding to enquiries by our correspondent, Okoh said, “We are currently reviewing the Privatisation Work Plan for 2020 to determine the transactions that are feasible within the fiscal year in view of the disruption caused by the COVID-19 health pandemic.

“We should be ready by the end of next week.”
Although Okoh did not disclose whether the review will require putting more public assets up for sale, the need to source funds for the N5.37tn deficit in the 2020 budget may compel the Federal Government to seek more revenue from additional privatisation transactions.

Before the economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic instigated the ongoing review of the 2020 Privatisation Work Plan, the BPE had targeted the generation of N266.8bn as revenue from the sale and commercialisation of public assets during the year.

The sum of N3.9bn would be expended on the trans-actions, leaving a net revenue of N266.8bn.The bulk of the projected 2020 transactions are in the energy sector, where the BPE targeted N268.3bn.

The transactions from which the BPE planned to generate the N266.8bn include carry overs from the 2019 approved work plan, such as completion of sales of Yola Electricity Distribution Company and Afam Power Limited and Afam Three Fast Power. The transactions also included the Nigeria Integrated Power Projects.

Other transactions in the initial 2020 work plan include sale of additional shares of Geregu to Amperion Power, Tafawa Balewa Square, Bank of Agriculture, Dowell Schlumberger Nigeria Limited, NMC houses, Nigeria Commodity Exchange and River Basin Development Authorities and Lagos International Trade Fair complex.
