The main feature of the night was a drama presentation of the legendary Queen Mother, Idia, whose brave exploits in saving the old kingdom are well emblazoned in Benin folklore.
Earlier in the days, Nigerians in attendance were treated to a full dose of royal culinary delight by participants from Ekiti, Delta, Adamawa, Enugu, Imo, Kaduna and others in a healthy Food Fair Competition staged to ascertain the ethnic group that can rival Benin royalty.
As the week goes on many activities like Culture Quiz Competition, Royal Splendour, Traditional Wrestling, Free Skill Acquisition, Free Medical Services, Royal Golf Tourney etc, Nigerians had a great and complete treat of culture and royalty never before experienced in NAFEST.
Ogun State took second position while Edo and Bayelsa were tied in third position.
In other competitive events, Delta State won the traditional cuisine, Kwara State won in the Children Essay writing, Edo State won the children poetry, Anambra State won the traditional wrestling while Ogun won the Drama event.
Plateau State was named as the state to host the 2020 NAFEST.
Prof. Victor Uwaifo was given award for using music to promote culture.
Speaking at the event, Director General of the National Council for Arts and Culture, Otumba Olusegun Runsewe, hailed the Oba of Benin, Oba Ewaure II for the warm reception he accorded the NAFEST contingent.
Also at the event the Vice president make a remarkable statement:
The vice president, who was in Benin for the ongoing National Festival of Arts and Culture (NAFEST), said: “We are here in Benin to celebrate the NAFEST, taking place in your kingdom.
“This event is special because Edo is the center of culture. I am sure we will have the best of NAFEST in the state.”
He further thanked the Oba for the support given to art, which he described as “a unifying factor for Nigeria.”
He said: “Art unifies this nation. There is no country in the world that has as much languages and sub-culture like Nigeria. “When people talk or speak in terms of separation and disunity, they fail to note that our diversity is our strength and our bond.”
It was remarkable
