Lagos Government sealed a joint redevelopment partnership with Afriland Properties to develop Falomo Towers

A major urban renewal project that will restore the aesthetic landscape of Falomo, the commercial suburb of Ikoyi in Lagos State, has been flagged off by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on Friday.

Lagos State Development and Property Corporation (LSDPC) sealed a joint redevelopment partnership with Afriland Properties Plc, a private developer, to turn former Falomo Shopping Complex to a premium sky-high real estate that will enhance the socio-economic outlook of the neighbourhood.

Falomo Towers, being developed on 11,950 square metres of land, will offer a blend of green amenities that will promote quality living.

Afriland Properties Plc is a subsidiary of Heir Holdings, owned by the foremost entrepreneur and banker, Mr. Tony Elumelu.

Sanwo-Olu, at the sod turning ceremony held at the project site, said the construction flag-off ended a decade-long discussion with the developer to revive the project and build iconic towers that would turn around the fallow land for the benefit of the public.

The Governor said the project was another milestone achieved by his administration to renew urban amenities, stressing that the strategic implementation of the Lagos Masterplan had been dependent on the Government’s ability to forge workable partnership between the public and private sectors.

He said: “This is a phenomenal project that will bring back the lost ambience of Ikoyi. When this partnership was initiated 10 years ago, I was the Managing Director of LSDPC. It is interesting to note that we’ve all gone through arbitration but we didn’t throw a wrong punch. We agreed this project must not be thrown away. Today we are making a transaction that is bigger and better than what was initially proposed 10 years ago.

“This testifies to the uniqueness of public and private sectors in ensuring things can be made a lot better when we sit and agree. This is a clear example of what Public Private Partnership (PPP) model is out to achieve when partnerships and collaborations are pursued and implemented with seriousness. When we put our minds of possibilities to ideas, great things happen. This aptly describes the story of today’s flag-off of construction of Falomo Towers.”

Sanwo-Olu described Afriland Properties as a tested, trusted and reliable developer, saying the Corporation had found the right partner for the redevelopment project.

The Governor reiterated that the State Government would remain committed to ensuring the investors get full value for their investments, while promising to continue to pursue business environment reforms, including automation of land and property records to scale up transparency and efficiency that catalyse sustainable investments.

Elemelu said the partnership was another testimony to the Lagos State Government’s belief in the private sector as a key development driver in the State, praising the Lagos political leadership for setting the pace of private sector inclusion in governance.

For surmounting obstacles that delayed the take-off of the partnership, Elumelu said Lagos remained the most hospitable environment to investors seeking profitable return on their investments.

He said: “I commend Gov. Sanwo-Olu and the political leaders of the State for believing in the private sector. What we are witnessing today attests to their beliefs in the private sector as driver of development in the State

“For private sector to do well, the political leadership must create the right environment. Lagos has set the pace in this direction. This partnership is a celebration of dialogue and this makes Lagos remain the most hospitable environment for investors.”

LSDPC Chief Executive Officer, Hon. Ayodeji Joseph, said the project site evoked memories of a glorious past for Island dwell in the 1970s, noting that the Corporation took an informed decision to turn around the site by building residential apartments to provide additional accommodation to the growing middle class, business professionals and the swelling rank of young citizens.

He said: “Over forty years down the line, the Corporation in its decision to renew some of its facilities has deemed it fit to redevelop the site of the shopping complex, taking into consideration the realities of today’s needs as well as the environmental impact implications.

“To achieve this purpose, we decided to mobilise finance from the private sector. This decision will free resources that could otherwise be tied down to this project, for other pressing needs. In addition, it will allow the project to benefit from the competitive efficiencies for which the private sector is better known.”

Chief Executive Officer of Afriland Properties, Mrs. Uzo Oshogwe, noted that the redevelopment project was a revival of a landmark, saying: “With the project, we tend to give Ikoyi back its aesthetic landmark

She said the iconic project would enhance and beautify Ikoyi skyline, adding that the partnership would be creating economic opportunities and social wealth that would transform the State and the country.

The project development is expected to be completed in 30 months.

The Nigerian Customs Service (NCS) says its officers caught on tape assaulting a civilian on a highway are currently under investigation.

The NCS stated this on Monday in a statement by its spokesperson, Timi Bomodi.

A video, which has since gone viral, showed Customs and Army officers on duty along the Benin-Agbor Expressway assaulting a man identified as Samson Nwachuckwu, a special assistant to Delta State Governor, Ifeanyi Okowa.

A twitter user, Harrison Gwamnishu, posted on Sunday that the two uniformed officers jointly assaulted Mr Nwachukwu by slapping him for an undisclosed reason.

In the video, Mr Nwachukwu never retaliated “but endured the pain” as he was reported to have lodged complaints of the incident to higher authorities.

Reacting to the incident, the customs officials at the entire zone have since been withdrawn and have reported to Port Harcourt for investigation.

“This officer and other members of that team from FOU Zone ‘C’ have since been withdrawn from patrol duties and are currently under administrative investigation at the NCS Zonal Headquarters Zone ‘C’ Port Harcourt,” the statement said.

The attention of the Nigeria Customs Service has been drawn to a video making the rounds on social media. In it, one of our officers was recorded assaulting an unarmed civilian. This action took place on the Benin – Agbor expressway on Saturday the 7th of May 2022 at about 5.00 pm.

The NCS would like to reassure the general public of its commitment to the welfare and safety of all citizens and frowns seriously at any act by its personnel capable of misrepresenting its corporate image.

Residents of the Ogbor-Hill area of Aba, Abia State have called on the State Commissioner of Police, CP Janet Agbede, state Governor, Okezie Ikpeazu and other relevant authorities to launch an investigation into cases of alleged deaths and missing persons in an unnamed hotel located in the area.

A resident, Chimuanya Ezenna on Friday alleged that the hotel which is strategically located around Ubani Street, Ogbor-Hill Aba has become a notorious centre for reports of deaths and missing customers with nobody arrested yet.

Ezenna alleged that majority of the residents who reported the cases of alleged deaths and missing persons at the Ogbor-Hill Police Division are now afraid of going further over threat to their lives and failure of the police to arrest any suspect in connection with the cases.

He said that the latest case of death at the hotel occurred on 15/04/2022 when a young lady whose identity is yet unknown was killed and her two-year-old female child stolen by her killers.

According to Ezenna residents gathered from a reliable source in the hotel that her killers are two young men, whose identities are yet to be revealed by the Hotel management even though their faces were captured by the CCTV camera of the hotel.

"Information available to us has it that over seven murder cases have been recorded at the said Hotel since the beginning of this year 2022 which the Director of the Hotel has covered by truncating investigation to save the Hotel's name.

"At a point in time a few days ago, some youths vowed to set the Hotel ablaze if the killers of the innocent young single mother of one is not unveiled.

"The Azuka Divisional Police Station is currently investigating and has released the Director of the Hotel who has not fed the Police with the necessary information of the killers of lady.

"The incessant killing going on in that hotel and why Police has refused to prosecute the Hotel Management and Staff for Conspiracy and Murder is provoking and the Governor need to do something."

When contacted, Abia State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Geoffrey Ogbonna confirmed that the incident did happen and the corpse of the deceased was moved to a morgue for preservation while efforts are being intensified to unravel the people behind the dastardly act.

Ogbonna said that the state Criminal Investigation Department (CID) is handling the matter now and if there is anyone with useful information that can help police to identify the people behind the crime, such a person should feel free to volunteer such information to the police.

Imo State : Over 100 youths feared dead at Abaezi Ohaji-Egbema illegal bunkering site

Imo: Over 100 youths feared dead at Abaezi Ohaji-Egbema illegal bunkering site

At least hundreds persons are feared dead as fire engulfed an illegal crude oil refining site at Abaezi forest, in Ohaji-Egbema Local Government Area of Imo State.

Binnabook gathered that about one hundred and fifty others sustained serious degrees of burns.

Speaking on the ugly development, the State Commissioner for Petroleum Resources, Goodluck Opiah, who represented Governor Hope Uzidinma of Imo State during his visit to the scene, said the fire consumed the lives of so many youths.

He said, “at the moment, I can’t really confirm the number of the deceased because many family members have removed the corpses of so many others.”

Opiah said Okenze Onyewoke, the owner of the illegal refinary, had been declared wanted by the government of Imo State.

He said, “apart from this calamity, the act has destroyed the acqatic life of the community. Our people before now are predorminantly farmers and fishermen.

“Look around, you’ll find smokes coming from this illegal act. If this is not enough for any person to stop, I think the community is heading for what I can’t describe.

“Most of the people who are engaging in this act are from Rivers, Bayelsa and other neigbouring States and it is sabotage for our people to allow this illegal act to continue.

“I wish to appeal to our youths to desist from making themselves available for this illegal act. This is a sucidal business they got themselves into.

“On behalf of Imo State Government, we condole with the berieved family. Imo State Government pray God gives the family of those who lost their lives the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss.”

An eyewitness, one Mr Eze Ikedi told Our correspondent who visited the scene that the incident happened around 11 pm last night.

He said that residents of the area woke up to see the huge flame on the Abaezi forest.

“The fire was even entering the bush,” Ikedi said.

He added that, “we saw the people that were inside, no one was seen coming out.

“People were also scared going close the place but later when people got there, they found out it was over hundred persons that were burnt and one hundred and fifty others who sustained serious burns were rushed into the villages for treatment.”

He further said many of them were rejected by the village health center.

The Lagos State government has reopened Chrisland School, which was shut amid Sex scandal involving some of its pupils

The Lagos State government has reopened Chrisland School, which was shut amid the scandal involving some of its pupils.

Video of a 10-year-old pupil involved in immorality with her colleague during a trip to Dubai, had gone viral.

The incident had sparked a nationwide outrage, with many accusing the school and parents of the kids of poor mentoring.

The Lagos state government had announced a closure of all branches of Chrisland School pending outcome of investigation on the issue.

In a statement, Mrs Folasade Adefisayo, Commissioner of of Education, directed reopening of the school from Monday.

“The Lagos State Ministry of Education has directed that all Chrisland Schools shut for alleged misconduct of some students in Dubai be reopened from Monday April 25th, 2022.”

“The directive follows a review of the ongoing administrative investigation into the incident. Besides, it is to ensure that students are not denied access to learning when the new term begins on Monday 25th April, 2022.

The State Government shut the schools for safety of students and the staff and to ensure unhindered investigation of the incident.

“The Ministry of Education and other relevant agencies of the State, in conjunction with the school’s Parent Teachers Association, will be working on a scheduled psychosocial support for the students. An extensive assessment of the school’s procedure, especially on external trips and excursions, is being made to identify safety gaps and prevent such incidents.

“Besides, the Ministry will launch the reviewed guidelines/protocols governing private and public schools across the State within the next one month.”

Meanwhile, the police are still investigating staff of the school and parents of the pupils involved in the misconduct.

Daily Trust understands that they are currently being at the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department in Panti, Yaba, Lagos.

The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, in an interview with our correspondent, said those invited were already in Panti.

He had said, “The invited people have shown up and as I speak to you (around 7.30pm), they are at State CIID, Panti. They are still giving their statements.”

Chrisland High School Breaks Silence On Sex Scandal

Chrisland School, Lagos, has broken its silence on the sex scandal that forced Lagos government to shut all its branches in the state.

In a viral video, a 10-year-old female pupil of the school was seen being involved in sexual act with some male pupils.

The incident, which sparked outrage on social media, was said to have occurred during a trip to Dubai for the World School Games that held between March 8 and March 14, 2022.

Daily Trust had earlier contacted the school over the incident, but a representative, who spoke said a statement would be issued.

In the statement, which Akin Fadeyi, a member of the School’s Advisory Board issued on behalf of the management, the school confirmed that a total of 76 students were taken to Dubai.

Of the 76 children who represented Chrisland, Fadeyi disclosed that 71 “ensured an untainted adherence to the standards, abiding with laid down regulations and code of conduct”.

“Within these 71, we kept our girls on the 11th floor and Boys on the 4th floor to draw clear lines that respect moral boundaries.”

“While we understand the emotions this has generated, we assure the public that our first approach as an institution was to assume parental roles by offering support to those involved and ensuring that nothing affected their senses of esteem. However, after a comprehensive evaluation of the situation, we cannot help but express how scandalised and distressed we feel as mothers, fathers and instructors with a relationship that holds a direct bearing on the development of those involved.

“We were, however, compelled to engage with the parents of the remaining students who unfortunately got themselves involved in misconduct, and in accordance with our code of conduct processes, which are well known to the parents, we meted out measured reprimands to them to instill a sense of discipline and as deterrence to others. This was also to caution our students on the need to remain on the path of resisting wrong influences.

“The disciplinary action was in order not to undermine our cohesive culture as a community of future leaders and committed instructors, but to be assertive in handing down the sort of discipline that seeks to correct and reform our children, when they stray from the path of rectitude.

“While we hasten to affirm that as an institution that is managing children from diverse backgrounds, we cannot lay claim to, or embark on any sense of self-righteousness in our approach, but we learn and evolve within the frames of best practices every single day. We recognise that there will always be space for improvement, we are therefore irrevocably committed to re-evaluating our processes to reinforce child protection protocols, even as we shall leave no stone unturned in ensuring that the senses of esteem of the children involved are uncompromisingly preserved.”

Fadeyi also denied that a pregnancy test was conducted on the minor involved in the act as claimed by the mother, explaining that it was a COVID post travel test.

Lagos State government has shut down Chrisland Schools indefinitely amid allegation of rape.

The Lagos State government has shut down Chrisland Schools indefinitely amid allegation of rape.

A 10-year-old pupil of the school was said to have been raped by her schoolmates during a trip to Dubai.

The incident sparked outrage on social media, with many calling on government to act.

In a statement on Monday, the state Ministry of Education said investigation into the matter was ongoing.

The state government disclosed that the allegations of sexual violence involving students of Chrisland School are being investigated by the relevant Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs), including the Ministry of Education; Office of Education Quality Assurance; Ministry of Youth and Social Development; Ministry of Justice, and the Lagos State Domestic & Sexual Violence Agency.

The statement jointly signed by the MDAs, revealed that the criminal allegations had been escalated to the Commissioner of Police.

“In view of the allegations, we are committed to ensuring that adequate medical and pscyho-social support is provided. This is to reassure members of the public of the State Government’s commitment to safety and child protection, especially in ensuring that all child-centered institutions within the state, formulate and implement policies and systems that are compliant with the Executive Order (No.EO/AA08 of 2016), Lagos State Safeguarding and Child Protection Program.”

The State Government therefore reminded the general public that anyone who engages in any visual depiction of sexually explicit conduct involving of a child commits an offence and is liable to custodial sentence of 14years. “This includes producing, distributing, receiving, or possessing an image of child pornography.”

Daily Trust had earlier contacted the school for its reaction to the incident.

A representative of the school had said who spoke over the phone had said, “Yes, this is Chrisland School. I am not permitted to speak on the issue. We will soon release an official statement. Thank you.”

Mother Of Julian, 10-Year-Old Chrisland Gang-Raped Student Speaks

The mother of Miss Julia, a 10-year-old student of Chrisland School who was gang-raped by her fellow students, cried out for justice.

The devastated mother called on Nigerians and the Nigerian government to get justice for her daughter.

In an eleven-minute video, she narrated how the school authority tried to cover up the evil done to her daughter by fellow students.

According to her, the school's Head Teacher, Mrs Azieke called her on a phone for a meeting in her office. On getting to the school, she met two women in the Head Teacher's office and was told they came in from the Headquarters of the school.

The Head Teacher told her that the reason for the meeting was to inform her that her daughter who was among the students who went to Dubai to represent the school in a competition was involved in a 'Truth or Dare' game which resulted in her kissing her fellow student.

The Head Teacher then advised her to collect her daughter's phone from her since it was discovered that the students learnt the 'Truth or Dare' game through their phones.

The Head Teacher and the other women whom she met in her office caution her not to tell her husband what has happened.

She assured them that since the only crime the child committed was 'kissing', she will not inform her father, also, she will collect her phone from her.

Days after the meeting, the Head Teacher called her, then sent her a link to join a Zoom meeting. When she joined, she saw different people in the meeting and the person who officiated the meeting said that the meeting was held to make sure her daughter was fine.

When she heard the statement "meeting was held to make sure her daughter was fine", she demanded to know what happened to her daughter but none of them could open up to her.

Few days later a parent from that school called her to her house and showed her a video where her daughter was ra.ped by some male students.

On getting home, she told her husband and the daughter was beaten. Her daughter later opened up and told her how the school management abandoned them in a hotel room in Dubai and how the Head Teacher after discovering what happened, warned her not to tell her parents what happened.

She also alleged that the school has been having secret meetings with her daughter without her knowledge as a mother and the school also threatened to kill her daughter if she tells anyone what happened.

Two Female Prisoners Fall Pregnant After Having Sex With Transgender Inmate

Two women are pregnant after they had consensual sex with a fellow prisoner at the Edna Mahan Correctional Facility in Clinton, New Jersey, it is claimed in a letter from another inmate.

Two inmates of a women only prison have fallen pregnant after having consensual sex with a transgender inmate, it has been reported.

The women are among 800 people, including 27 transwomen, being held at the Edna Mahan Correctional Facility in Clinton, New Jersey.

In a letter sent to US outlet NJ 105.5, an inmate claimed that one of the women, who is not eligible for parole until 2104, was five months pregnant.

The letter said that the inmates had a history of sex acts in public areas and had to be separated.

Demi Minor has claimed to be the person responsible for impregnating the two prisoners via a website Justice 4 Demi, which she is understood to help run from prison.

It claims that she was sentenced to 30 years inside at the age of 16 for manslaughter, and that she has now been approved for correctional surgery.

A woman claiming to be the mother of one of the children has written a blogpost on the website, titled 'Freedom, Love, Pregnancy and Trauma'.

"Surprisingly I am three months pregnant and I conceived while incarcerated here at Edna Mahan Correctional Facility," she wrote.

"Although Edna Mahan breeds a 'pervasive culture of rape', I WAS NOT RAPED, nor was I forced to do anything that I did not want to do.

"Despite it not being permitted I fell in love and had consensual sex with a woman who is trans. Consensual sex is a prohibited act in Edna Mahan."

The woman added that she found “love in a hopeless place" - a quote from a Rhianna song - and that she is 31 and serving a life sentence.

New Jersey prisons began housing transgender inmates who identify as women at women's prisons last year following a lawsuit at the American Civil Liberties Union of New Jersey.

The lawsuit followed claims from a transgender woman who said she was abused at a male prison.

New Jersey's policy does not require trans women inmates to undergo gender-reassignment surgery to be held in the facility.

It has received some pushback, with two Edna Mahan prisoners filing a lawsuit seeking to end New Jersey’s gender identity policy for prisons, it has been reported.

They claimed that they were harassed by trans inmates and that transgender inmates were having sex with female prisoners.

NJ PBA, a union for state correction officers, has also criticised the policy.

President William Sullivan told "We opposed this policy change believing it would be detrimental to the general population of female inmates being housed at Edna Mahan and also bring added stress to our correctional police officers assigned to this institution."

ACLU legal director Jeanne LoCicero has argued that allowing trans-women into women's prison protects their rights.

"(It's) in line with New Jersey's strong anti-discrimination laws that prevent discrimination and harassment on the basis of gender identity," she wrote.

An investigation has been launched into the pregnancies.

Nigeria Banks Contribute $100 Million To The Renovation Of The National Arts Theatre Lagos

According to Mr Godwin Emefiele, Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Nigeria’s Bankers’ Committee has so far committed to the ongoing renovation work at the National Arts Theatre Complex (CBN).

“For the avoidance of doubt, this project is costing the bankers’ committee, by last estimates, about $100 million,” Emefiele said on Saturday, shortly after embarking on an inspection tour of work done so far on the facility with Minister of Information Lai Mohammed and other officials. More money will be invested in this project, but it will be a business where the money will be repaid.

“I’m delighted that foreign investors have already expressed an interest.”

“I want to state unequivocally that we have received inquiries from investors in the United States who are interested in not only the National Arts Theatre, but also the creative opportunities that we are developing around here.”

“As a result, I must say that this is very exciting for us at the Bankers’ Committee as well as for the Central Bank of Nigeria.”

He went on to say that President Muhammadu Buhari would lay the groundwork for the four verticals – music, film, information technology, and fashion – on the day of his inauguration.

He thanked the Lagos State Government for its active support of the project and expressed his delight at the progress made thus far.

“I’m getting excited because we’re hoping that by the end of this year, this complex will be hosting some programs and global activities.”

“We’d be talking to arts galleries, and hopefully by this year, we’ll be able to bring the arts exhibition into this complex because we know it’ll be ready by November.”

“So, in November, we can begin to bring this place back to us, and then breathe new life into Nigeria’s tourism sector, particularly in Lagos State,” he said.

Lai Mohammed also praised the Bankers’ Committee for providing funding for the project, as well as the Lagos State Government for creating an enabling environment, particularly in the areas of rail transportation and waterway usage.

“From what we’ve seen, a lot of work has been done here since our last visit in December 2021,” he said.

“We are pleased with the progress we have made.” We are optimistic. We’ve crossed the Rubicon.

“When we return in two months, we will all see that a lot of work has been buried under.”

The minister reassured Nigerians that the renovation project would not be “abandoned.”

Mr. Sunday Dare, Minister of Youth and Sports Development, praised the Lagos State Government and the governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria for their unwavering commitment to the National Theatre renovation project.

He praised the CBN Governor for ensuring a steady flow of funds for the project’s execution.

The minister was especially pleased that many jobs would be created for young people in the field of creative entertainment.

“On behalf of the Nigerian Youths, who will be the primary beneficiaries of the renovation project,” he said, “I want to thank the Federal Government and the Bankers’ Committee for initiating the project.”

Will Smith Slaps Chris Rock After He Joked About His Wife At The Oscars

Sunday night’s Oscar ceremony, Will Smith shocked the room by approaching the stage and slapping presenter Chris Rock in the face after the comedian made a joke about Smith’s wife, actor Jada Pinkett Smith.

Rock was on the Oscars stage presenting the category for best documentary. He began by making a few jokes about the audience members, including Pinkett Smith, referring to her as “G.I. Jane” due to her closely cropped hair. (Pinkett Smith has spoken in the past about her battle with alopecia.) Shortly after he made the joke, Smith walked to the stage and slapped Rock across the face. He then returned to his seat and shouted, “Keep my wife’s name out of your fucking mouth.”

At first, watching the telecast, it was unclear whether the assault was a planned bit. But the show’s audio immediately cut out after Smith slapped Rock, then stayed muted as Rock said “Will Smith just smacked the shit out of me” while Smith walked away. Smith then returned to his seat and shouted, “Keep my wife’s name out of your fucking mouth!”

“Wow, dude,” replied Rock “It was a G.I. Jane joke.”

Rock went on to present the documentary prize to Summer of Soul director Questlove. Immediately after, Sean “Diddy” Combs came onstage to introduce a clip montage celebrating the 50th anniversary of The Godfather. “I didn’t know that this year was going to be the most exciting Oscars ever!” he said. “Okay, Will, Chris—we’re going to solve that like family. But right now, we’re moving on with love.”

Per Vanity Fair’s Rebecca Ford, Denzel Washington pulled Smith to the side for a conversation after the exchange, kneeling alongside Pinkett Smith when the show returned from the commercial break. Tyler Perry also joined Washington and Smith during the commercial break. The Smiths, per Ford, have been holding hands since the assault occurred.

An Academy librarian also confirmed to VF’s Joy Press that this was likely the first time there had been real violence onstage at the ceremony. However, this was not the first time Rock had made jokes about Pinkett Smith at the Oscars. During the 2016 ceremony, which Rock hosted, he poked fun at Pinkett Smith for famously boycotting that year’s ceremony. “Jada boycotting the Oscars is like me boycotting Rihanna’s panties,” Rock said at the time. “I wasn’t invited.”

Smith is in attendance at this year’s Oscars competing for the best actor prize. He has been considered a front runner for months, thanks to his performance in the biopic King Richard.

Egypt, Kenya, Nigeria, Senegal, South Africa and Tunisia to establish mRNA vaccine production

Egypt, Kenya, Nigeria, Senegal, South Africa and Tunisia to establish mRNA vaccine production

At the European Union - African Union summit in Brussels today WHO Director-General, Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, announced the first six countries that will receive the technology needed to produce mRNA vaccines on the African continent. Egypt, Kenya, Nigeria, Senegal, South Africa and Tunisia all applied and have been selected as recipients.

The announcement was made at a ceremony hosted by the European Council, France, South Africa and WHO in the presence of President Macron, President Ramaphosa, the President of the European Council, Charles Michel and the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen.

The global mRNA technology transfer hub was established in 2021 to support manufacturers in low- and middle-income countries to produce their own vaccines, ensuring that they have all the necessary operating procedures and know-how to manufacture mRNA vaccines at scale and according to international standards.

Primarily set up to address the COVID-19 emergency, the hub has the potential to expand manufacturing capacity for other products as well, putting countries in the driver’s seat when it comes to the kinds of vaccines and other products they need to address their health priorities.

Depending on the infrastructure, workforce and clinical research and regulatory capacity in place, WHO and partners will work with the beneficiary countries to develop a roadmap and put in place the necessary training and support so that they can start producing vaccines as soon as possible.

WHO Director-General, Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said: “No other event like the COVID-19 pandemic has shown that reliance on a few companies to supply global public goods is limiting, and dangerous. In the mid- to long-term, the best way to address health emergencies and reach universal health coverage is to significantly increase the capacity of all regions to manufacture the health products they need, with equitable access as their primary endpoint.”

President Cyril Ramaphosa, of South Africa said: "This is an initiative that will allow us to make our own vaccines and that, to us, is very important. It means mutual respect, mutual recognition of what we can all bring to the party, investment in our economies, infrastructure investment and, in many ways, giving back to the continent."

President Emmanuel Macron, of France said: “Improved public health benefits, supporting African health sovereignty and economic development are the principal goals of strengthening local production in Africa. In an interconnected world, we need stronger and new partnerships between countries, development partners and other stakeholders to empower regions and countries to fend for themselves, during crises, and in peace time.”

President Charles Michel, European Council said: “We need to create an environment where every scientist, health worker, and government can band together for a common cause. Working together to build new solutions to protect what is most precious - our health and our lives."

To ensure that all countries build the necessary capacity to produce their own vaccines and other health technologies, WHO has been working to establish a biomanufacturing workforce training hub that will train people from all interested countries in scientific and clinical research and production capacity. The training hub will be announced in the coming weeks.

In addition, WHO’s current regulatory strengthening activities in low- and middle-income countries will expand through a global benchmarking tool that assesses countries’ ability to ensure the quality, safety and efficacy of health products and provides training where improvements are needed to build regulatory authorities that are agile and fit-for-purpose for the future.

The WHO mRNA technology transfer hub is part of a larger effort aimed at empowering low- and middle-income countries to produce their own vaccines, medicines and diagnostics to address health emergencies and reach universal health coverage.

The initial effort is centred on mRNA technologies and biologicals, which are important for vaccine manufacturing and can also be used for other products, such as insulin to treat diabetes, cancer medicines and, potentially, vaccines for other priority diseases such as malaria, tuberculosis and HIV. The ultimate goal is to extend capacity building for national and regional production to all health technologies.

We got money ritual guidelines from Facebook – Ogun teenage Ritualist

We got money ritual guidelines from Facebook – Ogun teenage boys

The four teenage boys nabbed for slaughtering Sofiat Kehinde and burning her head for money ritual have said they got the guidelines on popular social media platform, Facebook.

The teenagers said they were inspired by the guidelines, saying that it informed why they decided to slaughter Sofiat, said to be the girlfriend of one of them.

DAILY POST reported Saturday that the boys were caught at Oke Aregba area of Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, after they had beheaded Sofiat and put her head in a local pot for burning.

The police at Adatan police station had arrested Wariz Oladeinde, Abdulgafar Lukman, Mustakeem Balogun, and Soliu Majekodunmi, the boyfriend of the slain girl.

Parading the suspects on Monday at the State Headquarters, Eleweran, Abeokuta, Sofiat’s boyfriend, Soliu, confessed that when the victim visited him on Friday, he strangled her and cut off her head immediately with the aid of his accomplices.

Soliu explained how they had contributed money and purchased other ingredients needed for the ritual, while awaiting the day they would kill the lady, who he said was introduced to him in December 2021.

According to him, Mustekeem, who used to attend the same Islamic society (Asalatu) with Sofiat, was the arrow head of the heinous act, saying he was the one who brought the guidelines from Facebook and pestered the group of friends to carryout the act so as to become rich quickly.

He said, “Last year December, Mustakeem gave me her number that I should be dating her. The first time Sofiat came to my house, I informed Mustakeem that she was around and that she had agreed to my proposal for a relationship.

“The second time Sofiat came, I told him, but he told me that she is not a good girl and advised that we should use her (for money rituals).

“Mustakeem said he saw a guideline for ‘Osole’ (money ritual) on Facebook and he had a screenshot of it.

“Since then, he had been disturbing me that we should use Sofiat for money ritual, but I didn’t agree with him.

“In fact, on many occasions, I lied to Sofiat that I am not at home just to dissuade her from coming.

“During the process, Mustakeem had ensured that we all make contributions towards other items needed for the ritual.

“So, eventually, Sofiat came to my house on Friday. I was inside my room with her while Mustakeem was outside. Later Mustakeem told me that we should go ahead and use her since all other needed items for the rituals are ready.”

Soliu told newsmen that he had regretted his action, urging other youths who are in a hurry to make money quickly to wait for their time.

“I have regrets. If I knew it would end up like this I would not have gotten myself involved in the act. My advice to those who don’t want to wait for their time is that, they should please wait for their time,” he said.
