Wind will be the dominant technology of the next decade in South Africa

Wind power will be the main type of power plant that will be built in South Africa over the next decade. In fact, according to the new national energy strategy (IRP) adopted by the country, 14.4 GW of this type of power plant will be built by 2030, at the rate of 1.5 GW set up annually between 2022 and 2030.

In doing so, wind energy will supply 17.8% of the electricity produced in the country by 2030, becoming the second largest source of electricity after coal supplying 58.8% of power plants in the energy mix.

The strategy also calls for the establishment of 6 GW of solar power plants by 2030. 2.5 GW of electrical dams will be built, as well as 1.5 GW of coal power plants. The country also plans to set up 2 GW of electrical storage capacity and 3 GW of gas plants.

According to some experts, including Peter Attard Monalto, the director of capital investments at Intellidex, these forecasts are based on a much too high energy demand. It is very likely, he believes, that there is a structural shift towards a more energy-efficient economy. This change could result in a decoupling of growth in electricity demand from economic growth.
