Nigeria Govt Postpones Fuel Subsidy Removal Till Further Notice

The Minister of Finance, Budget and Economic Planning, Hajia Zainab Ahmed, said in Abuja on Monday that the Federal Government had postponed the planned removal of subsidy on petroleum products till further notice.

Ahmed stated this at a meeting held at the National Assembly.

The meeting was convened at the instance of the President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan.

It had in attendance the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Timipre Sylva and the Group Managing Director of the. NNPC Limited, Mele Kyari, among others.

The Finance Minister said the Federal Government initially had the plans to remove subsidy on petroleum products from July this year.

She said that was the reason adequate provision was made in the 2022 national budget for subsidy payment till June.

She said, “Provision was made in the 2022 budget for subsidy payment from January till June. That suggested that from July, there would be no subsidy.

”The provision was made sequel to the passage of the Petroleum Industry Act which indicated that all petroleum products would be deregulated.

“Sequel to the passage of the PIA, we went back to amend the fiscal framework to incorporate the subsidy removal.

“However, after the budget was passed, we had consultations with a number of stakeholders and it became clear that the timing was problematic.

“We discovered that practically, there is still heightened inflation and that the removal of subsidy would further worsen the situation and impose more difficulties on the citizenry.

“Mr. President (Muhammadu Buhari), does not want to do that. What we are now doing is to continue with the ongoing discussions and consultations in terms of putting in place a number of measures.

“One of these include the roll out of the refining capacities of the existing refineries and the new ones which would reduce amount of products that would be imported into the country.

“We therefore need to return to the National Assembly to now amend the budget and make additional provision for subsidy from July 22 to whatever period that we agreed was suitable for the commencement of the total removal.'’

The Senate President therefore urged the organised labour unions in the country to shelve their proposed nationwide protests as it was no longer necessary.

The meeting dissolved to a closed session and it was still ongoing as at the time of filing this report.

P-Square Performs In Sierra Leone after their Reunion

It is just one week after their reunion, but Nigerian singers Peter and Paul Okoye of the P-Square are already shaking things up.

The pop duo performed together for the first in Sierra Leone on Saturday night, November 27.

The twin brothers gave an electrifying performance to the delight of the cheering crowd.

Skit Maker Sabinus has revealed why he wasn’t at Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo’s meeting hosting skit makers.

Sabinus has revealed why he wasn’t at Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo’s meeting hosting skit makers.

The Nigerian online comedian, in an interview with HipTV, said the timing was not right for the meet-up.

Osinbajo had, on November 2, received a delegation of skit makers at the presidential villa in Abuja.

As photos of the event surfaced on social media, it stirred up condemnatory remarks hinged on how authorities in Nigeria leverage the fame of comedians and entertainers to advance their political campaigns.

In the chat, Sabinus, whose real name is Chukwuemeka Ejekwu, said he was invited but failed to attend because of what he described as “wrong timing”.

“I was invited for it but I don’t think this is the right time for it, truth be told. For a while, we’ve been asking that police brutality be stopped. This is something they’ve been promising us. But right now, it’s still going on,” he said.

“When it comes to campaigns, they come close to talk to us. But when they get into office, they’re far away.

“Then we have to come to them. It’s very wrong. They should come over and fulfill their promises. Going to meet them, for me, is a no.”

In an interview with TheCable Lifestyle, Sabinus had spoken of his long-term plans to transition into Nollywood.

A Belgium Woman fell 100ft to her death while posing for photos at the edge of a cliff

A Belgium Woman plunged 100ft to her death while posing for photos at the edge of a cliff.

Zoe Snoeks, from Belgium, was on a trip in Luxembourg with her husband of almost a decade when she tragically fell yesterday morning.

The 33-year-old plummeted at least 30 metres after travelling to a cliff near the village of Nadrin to take photos before 9am.

She slipped on the cliff edge and fell into the Ourthe River, according to the public prosecutor's office.

Emergency services rushed to the scene, as well as scuba divers and a medical helicopter, and her body was later found.

Zoe's heartbroken husband Joeri Janssen - who she met in school and married in 2012 - says his wife "vanished" over the edge of the cliff yesterday, the day before they were due to return home.

"We only left on Sunday in our campervan. Since the pandemic, it was our little thing to drive across Europe in our van and take beautiful photos," he said.

"We got up very early to take pictures of the Herou (a 1,400-metre-high rock face that rises almost vertically above the Ourthe River).

"There is almost always mist there. It's great for photos. We arrived before 9am"

He explained that his wife was posing for photos on the edge of the cliff when she told him to "look out" for their dogs, Joy and Ivy, who they always took on their travels as well as a drone for taking aerial images.

"I turned to the dogs and told them to wait," Janssen added.

"When I turned back to Zoe, she was no longer there. She had just vanished. It must have happened in less than five seconds.

"I didn't see or hear anything. No rustling, no screams or shouts. I looked up and saw only dust.

"I called her, even though I knew it was hopeless. The chasm was several tens of metres deep.

"I immediately called the emergency services, but had almost no network. They didn't understand me, even though I speak a little French."

Janssen said he went to the nearby Le Belvedere Hotel to ask for help.

"The rescue team could not find Zoe immediately, they said in French. Then they told me that unfortunately Zoe was dead, also in French, but I immediately understood what they meant," he said.

The grieving husband said taking photos was his wife's "passion".

"I immediately unlocked her phone and saw that she had taken a photo on the cliff edge. Her very last selfie, Zoe is looking straight ahead," he said.

"You can also see the mist and the river where they finally found her body.

"The emergency services said Zoe fell at least 30 metres. I saw this place with my own eyes. I even think it was more like 50 metres (164 feet)."

It is unclear if the local authorities are continuing to investigate the victim's death.

Nigeria 2023 Election: Possible APC Presidential Candidate

With the 2023 presidential election fast approaching, there is a likelihood that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) will zone its ticket to the South. The general feeling in the party is that the North cannot be considered again, having had its fair share of two terms of eight years. In this report, TEMIDAYO AKINSUYI lists some powerbrokers in the party who have their eyes set on succeeding President Muhammadu Buhari whose tenure expires in May 2023.

Asiwaju Bola Tinubu

The ‘Jagaban’ as the former Lagos state governor and APC national leader is called by his teeming supporters is a major force to reckon with in the ruling party as far as the issue of 2023 presidency is concerned. There has been allegations and counter-allegations that there is a pact or gentleman’s agreement amongst founding leaders of the APC that President Muhammadu Buhari who was first elected in 2015 will handover to Tinubu in 2023. None of them has come out to confirm or deny this claim.

Even though Tinubu is yet to state whether he will contest or not, several political groups, the principal one being the South-west Agenda for Asiwaju 2023 (SWAGA ’23) has been canvassing support for him across the country.

Prof. Yemi Osinbajo

If there is any candidate best qualified to succeed President Muhammadu Buhari in 2023, then it is Osinbajo, a loyal, sound legal expert with versed knowledge of economic matters. Many youths in the country are rooting for Osinbajo because of his age (he will be 66 in 2023). Others also believe that having understudied the president in the last six years, he has a clear vision of the programmes of the administration and will continue with it if he becomes president.

However, two factors militating against Osinbajo is the fact that he has no political base. But for the controversy over a Muslim-Muslim ticket in APC in 2015, he couldn’t have been considered as Buhari’s running mate then. With the likelihood of Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, his benefactor running in 2023, Osinbajo stands no chance at all because it is likely that the Presidency may not endorse him. Analysts believe that the cabals are yet to forgive him for ‘taking the shine off the President when he acted on his behalf. It is also believe that he is yet to be forgiven for sacking the Director-General of the Department of State Service (DSS) , Lawal Daura in 2018 following the invasion of the National Assembly.

Kayode Fayemi

Fayemi is another leader who has the capacity to lead the country in 2023. The Ekiti state governor who is serving out his second term also has a huge followership among Nigerian youths. When he lost his reelection in 2014, he was handed the task conducting the presidential primary of the APC where he served as the Chairman of the APC National Convention Committee. He received accolades over the seamless manner in which the primary which produced President Muhammadu Buhari as the candidate was conducted. The President later appointed him as Minister of Mines and Steel Development, a position he resigned from in 2018 to contest for the Ekiti governorship election.

However, some of Fayemi’s critics especially in the APC believed that his position as the current chairman of the Nigerian Governors Forum has gotten into his head, making him challenge some leaders of the party who made him who he is today. Also, he is facing a herculean task of reconciling the APC factions in his home state of Ekiti, many of whom are plotting to stop him from installing a successor in next year’s governorship election.

Rotimi Amaechi

Analysts believe that Amaechi, a former two-time Speaker, two-time governor and current Minister of Transport is another force to reckon with when looking for likely presidential materials in 2023. Others also believe that Amaechi, a former chairman of the Nigerian Governors Forum also has the needed experience to continue from where President Buhari will stop in 2023, especially on his achievements in the rail sector, a critical programme the current administration has pursued vigorously.

However, being a blunt and fearless politician who says his mind without caring whose ox is gored, others believe he lacks the temperament needed of a leader of a country like Nigeria. There are others who believe that his being blunt is an asset as Nigeria needs a honest leader who will tell them the truth always.

Dave Umahi

When the Ebonyi state governor defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to APC in November 2020, many believed it was because he has ambition to succeed President Buhari. Till date, Umahi has not publicly said whether he is interested in the race or not.

In a recent interview, he said the chances of the South-East region producing the nation’s presidency in 2023 is in God’s hands.

Babatunde Fashola

The current Minister of Works and Housing is also another potential presidential material. Well-read, articulate and broad-minded, Fashola, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria shone brilliantly during his tenure as governor of Lagos state between 2007 to 2015. It was believed that President Buhari desired him as a running mate in 2015 but since that was not possible due to the Muslim-Muslim ticket controversy; he made him the most important minister in his cabinet with three portfolios as Minister of Power, Works and Housing. The President only removed the Power ministry from him because many believed the challenges in the power sector alone is enormous for one man to handle.

Recently, the emergence of some viral posters from a group, “The Nigeria Project 2023”, allegedly presenting Fashola and the Governor of Borno State, Prof. Babagana Zulum as presidential and vice-presidential candidates respectively went viral with many people attesting that they are both good pairs.

However, in a statement issued by his spokesperson, Mr Hakeem Bello, the minister distanced itself from the group, saying he has never met with them.

“Ordinarily, the poster and the various social media reports almost instantly orchestrated on its account would have been ignored as the handiwork of mischief-makers. However, it became necessary to issue this disclaimer for two key reasons.

“The first of such was to answer with a strong negative to the numerous inquiries from right-thinking and well-meaning Nigerians on whether the Honorable Minister had been contacted or if the groups had his consent in issuing the invitation.

“Without equivocation, no individual or group has contacted the Honorable Minister for or on behalf of The Nigeria Project 2023,” the statement read.

It stated that the minister is currently focused on leading his dedicated team in the Ministry of Works and Housing to deliver on the mandate of President Muhammadu Buhari for an expanded and upgraded road transport infrastructure, and affordable housing nationwide in order to achieve economic growth and prosperity for the citizenry.

“Secondly, is the fact that entities unknown to a political party cannot present candidates on behalf of such a political party. As a ranking and loyal member of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), the individual and groups cited as promoters of The Nigeria Project 2023 are unknown to the APC and the Honorable Minister,”.

In view of this, the minister urged members of the public to be wary of the antics of unsolicited individuals and support groups whose real intentions remain questionable. “Every support possible should be given to the efforts of the current administration under the leadership of President Muhammadu Buhari to deliver a better nation for all,” it said.

Shortly after Fashola’s disclaimer, another group, Fashola/Zulum Presidency Support Group, issued a statement saying the Minister should be President Muhammadu Buhari’s successor in 2023, saying with the current level of developmental projects scattered across the country, Nigeria needs continuity devoid of bitter politics and political witch-hunting.

The group stated that it would be of disservice to Nigeria and Nigerians if gains recorded during the Buhari-led administration were allowed to be eroded by another crop of leaders who do not understand the dynamics of the country and what it means to effectively manage the nation’s diversity assume leadership positions.

The group’s National Convener, Barrister Abayomi Medemaku, said that with Fashola’s vast experience and his blend of knowledge across all walks of life, he is better positioned to take the mantle of leadership and continue from where Buhari stops in 2023 and consolidate on his achievements.

Speaking during the group’s launching of Fashola/Zulum Presidency Support Group, Medemaku stated that he was convinced that Nigeria Project 2023 was worth investing in and that the group has began mobilising for the actualisation of this mandate.

According to him, Fashola and Zulum are the ones who can inspire hope in the young. There words is their bond. They are not after personal aggrandizement. They have given a new meaning to loyalty and dependability.

“We want to sell our candidates to their parties. The duo of Fashola/ Zulum can salvage our nation from it drowning state, thus we took it upon ourselves to mobilize for them. We sampled people’s opinion and the sampling tallied with our conviction. A Fashola/Zulum Presidency we believe if actualized will drive the Nigeria Nation forward. Fashola (SAN)and Professor Babagana Umara Zulum will turn Nigeria around for good. We have seen in these two men persons who share good visions for Nigeria and whose vision are selfless and heroic”.

It however remains to be seen if Fashola will listen to the demands of those asking him to vie for the presidency in 2023 or not.

The argument out there is that Fashola has no political base but his loyalists have argued that it won’t be an issue if he has the backing of President Buhari as all the political machinery in the party will work for whomever the president supports.

Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo has charged Nigerian youths to quit complaining about the country’s challenges. He, instead, urged them to move on.

He gave the charge on Monday during the National Youth Conference marking the 2021 African Youth Day in Abuja.

“The future will be what we make of it. Reject the temptation to inherit the biases and prejudice of your parents. Seize your opportunities to contribute your own quota to Nigeria.

“Seek the path of self-actualisation. Let the Nigerian dream be at the heart of what you do. Quit complaining. Move on. No matter what, move on!” he said.

“Seek the path of self-actualisation. Let the Nigerian dream be at the heart of what you do. Quit complaining. Move on. No matter what, move on!” he said.

The Vice President said the youths must build the future they desire by focusing on what is right.

According to him, building a nation is an inter-generational endeavour that requires the input of all, hence the need for youths to be innovative.

“Youth is the golden age of man. Remember, progress is not made by looking back. You are at the most developed time in the history of the world.

“The future will be defined by your innovation. The new Nigeria you seek is defined by a progressive spirit and not prejudices,” Osinbajo added.

On the agitation for leadership, he said Nigerian youths should explore the right channels in communicating their grievances rather than resort to destruction and violence.

Osinbajo admitted that there is a growing tension between the youths and the government. The VP, who admitted that it is normal for people to feel disenchanted towards their leaders, however, noted that such disenchantment must be expressed and resolved peacefully.

He assured them that the government is striving to provide a favourable environment for the youths to thrive in their chosen endeavours.

The signing of the Not-Too-Young-To-Run Bill into law by President Muhammadu Buhari three years ago is an indication of this administration’s willingness to carry the youth along in governance, he added.

ISIS Releases Video Of 12-year-old Terrorist Executing Two Nigerian Soldiers

ISIS Releases Video Of 12-year-old Terrorist Executing Two Nigerian Soldiers

In the 17-minute long video, the soldiers were shot dead by the insurgent with AK-47.

The Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), also known as Daesh (Arabic) has released a video showing a 12-year-old member of ISWAP (Islamic State's West Africa Province), the breakaway Boko Haram faction executing two Nigerian soldiers.

In the 17-minute long video, the soldiers were shot dead by the insurgent with his AK-47.

The video which was called "Makers of Epic Battles" also covered other attacks from ISWAP's spring campaign in Borno and Yobe states in 2021.

Analysing the footage, Tomasz Rolbiecki, a researcher on Islamic State’s attacks worldwide described the execution as “awful.”

“There are no words to describe how awful it is,” Rolbiecki posted on Twitter.

He continued, “In general, the video is mainly covering the attacks from ISWAP's spring campaign in northern Borno and Yobe, although there are also clips from southeastern and southwestern parts of Borno state.

“Most of the footage had been published in photo reports long before this video was released. Daesh has been doing it for years. However, there is also some new material.

“ISWAP confirms the militants are using an APC (seems like a Mowag Piranha variant) for the first time in a long time, if not ever. News of them using APCs and MRAPs have been circulating for a while now, but we have not seen a confirmation until now.

“The attack on Gajiram is next. It is difficult to say which one is it since there were several in the last year, and the footage was not released previously in any form.

“Then ISWAP shows an IED attack which must have happened in Mallam Fatori (I do not have the exact date). A video shot by one of the soldiers attacked by that IED is used by the militants to show the aftermath. That is a technique sometimes used by Daesh.

“After that, a clip from Geidam, in Yobe State, is shown. This was the attack from 23 April, in which ISWAP briefly established control over the town. We have seen most of that footage previously as well.”

Federal Jury in New York have found R&B singer R. Kelly guilty of sexual exploitation of a child, along with separate charges of sex trafficking

Jurors have found R&B singer R. Kelly guilty of racketeering, including acts of bribery and sexual exploitation of a child, along with separate charges of sex trafficking.

In this federal case in the Eastern District of New York, Kelly faced a total of nine counts -- one count of racketeering, with 14 underlying acts that included sexual exploitation of a child, kidnapping, bribery and sex trafficking charges, and also eight additional counts of violations of the Mann Act, a sex trafficking law.

Kelly was found guilty of nine counts -- one count of racketeering and eight counts of violating the Mann Act. Of the 14 underlying acts for the racketeering count, he needed to be found guilty of at least two to be convicted of that count. Jurors found prosecutors had proven all but two of the 14 underlying racketeering acts.

"Today's guilty verdict forever brands R. Kelly as a predator, who used his fame and fortune to prey on the young, the vulnerable and the voiceless for his own sexual gratification," said Jacquelyn Kasulis, acting US attorney from the Eastern District of New York.

R. Kelly is "a predator who used his inner circle to ensnare underage girls and young men and women for decades, in a sordid web of sex abuse, exploitation and humiliation," Kasulis added.

She said the victims were brave for coming forward and telling their stories.

"To the victims in this case, your voices were heard and justice was finally served," Kasulis said.

Attorney Gloria Allred, who represented three of the six victims who testified at trial, said Kelly is the worst predator she has ever pursued.

"First, he used the power of his celebrity to recruit vulnerable underage girls for the purpose of sexually abusing them. These were not May-October relationships, which is what his defense attorney wanted the jury to believe -- these were crimes against children and some adults," Allred said.

She said the verdict was also a message to other celebrities who prey on others.

Kelly did not have any reaction to the verdict when it was read in court and, according to his attorney, he was not expecting this verdict.

Attorney Deveraux Cannick said outside of court the government "cherry-picked" evidence to support its narrative.

"You didn't get to see what we saw in terms of the discovery. You didn't get to see all the inconsistencies," Cannick said. "We said in our summation that the government cherry-picked their version that they thought would support the continuation of the narrative."

Cannick continued, "Why would he expect this verdict given all the inconsistencies that we saw?"

Kelly could face decades in prison

The jury, made up of seven men and five women, began deliberating Friday afternoon.

In all, Kelly could face decades in prison at sentencing, which is scheduled for May 4.

The verdict comes 13 years after Kelly, whose full name is Robert Sylvester Kelly, was acquitted of child pornography charges at an Illinois state trial.

An attorney for Kelly said they are considering filing an appeal and are disappointed in the verdict.

R Kelly Trial

Trial began August 18

Fifty prosecution and defense witnesses took the stand during the five-week trial, including victims who were identified as "Jane Does" in Kelly's indictments. There were 45 prosecution witnesses.

Jane Doe 1 was the singer Aaliyah, who died in 2001.

Jurors heard from multiple witnesses who were present at her marriage to Kelly on August 31, 1994, when he was 27 and she was 15. Prosecutors showed copies of the couple's marriage license application, which listed Aaliyah's age as 18 at the time of their wedding, as well as their marriage license and marriage certification.

Kelly's former tour manager, Demetrius Smith, testified reluctantly that he bribed a worker at a welfare office in the Chicago area to create a welfare ID for Aaliyah.

"I made her (the welfare office worker) an offer and she took the money," Smith testified. "I gave her $500."

While the ID did not list Aaliyah's date of birth, an Illinois official testified September 15 that, generally, a person has to be at least 18 to obtain that particular type of ID.

Nathan Edmond, a minister who married the two, spoke publicly for the first time about the marriage while testifying September 1 said he met the couple the day he married them.

"I didn't think it was anybody special. I didn't understand it at all," Edmond testified.

Jurors also heard from a woman who identified herself only as Stephanie, who said she met Kelly at an event in Chicago in 1999 when she was 17, and that he eventually invited her to his studio.

"I remember him asking me my age," Stephanie testified. "When I said I was 17, he said it was fine."

Stephanie testified that Kelly sexually abused her when she was 17, and recorded them having sex. He paid for her travel to Florida to meet him on her 18th birthday and she stopped speaking with him shortly after the trip. She described fearing his angry outbursts, saying he would yell at her in public places.

A former radio intern who identified herself as Sonja testified September 9 that Kelly invited her to travel to Chicago to interview him at his studio in 2003 when she was 21 and that once she arrived, an employee put her in a room that Sonja quickly realized was "locked from the outside." She said she was kept in the room for several days, occasionally let out to go to the bathroom and shower.

"The door was locked. I wanted to get out," Sonja testified.

Sonja testified she lost consciousness after eating her first meal in days and saw Kelly adjusting his pants when she woke up. She testified that she believed he sexually assaulted her when she was unconscious.

"I was sexually assaulted," Sonja testified. "There was something in me that wasn't wanted."

Kelly's legal problems are not over

Kelly still has legal battles after this trial. In the Northern District of Illinois, he faces more federal charges including child pornography and obstruction charges. He also faces criminal charges in Minnesota, for two counts of engaging in prostitution with a minor, and Illinois state charges for aggravated criminal sexual abuse.

He has pleaded not guilty to all charges and denies any wrongdoing.

The 13-count indictment released in July 2019 in the Northern District of Illinois accused Kelly of videotaping himself having sex with at least four girls younger than 18 beginning in 1998. A few years later, after Kelly learned that some of those videos were missing from his "collection," he and others began paying "hundreds of thousands of dollars" to several people to recover them, the indictment says.

Also in 2019, a grand jury in Cook County, Illinois, indicted Kelly on 10 counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse involving four alleged victims, three of whom were listed as younger than 17.

That indictment was followed a few months later by another one from a Cook County grand jury on 11 counts ranging from aggravated criminal sexual assault and criminal sexual assault to aggravated criminal sexual abuse.

In August 2019, the Hennepin County Attorney's Office in Minnesota announced Kelly was charged with two counts of prostitution with a person under 18. According to the criminal complaint, a woman said the incident happened in 2001, when she was 17.
