American Musician, Rapper and Actor DMX, Dies at 50

DMX, a rapper known as much for his troubles as his music, has died, his family announced in a statement. He was 50.

"We are deeply saddened to announce today that our loved one, DMX, birth name of Earl Simmons, passed away at 50-years-old at White Plains Hospital with his family by his side after being placed on life support for the past few days," family's statement read in part.

"Earl was a warrior who fought till the very end," the family continued. "He loved his family with all of his heart and we cherish the times we spent with him."

The artist had been hospitalized since last week when he suffered a heart attack at his home in New York, according to his longtime attorney, Murray Richman.

"My childhood and love for music would not have been the same without this man," actor Chriss Redd tweeted. "DMX was easily my favorite artist growing up. I had every album, every ruff Ryder song, followed any artist he endorsed. Man....RIP the dog. There will never be another like him."

DMX (Dark Man X) began rapping in the early 1990s and released his debut album, "It's Dark and Hell Is Hot," in 1998.

With the deaths of fellow rappers The Notorious B.I.G. and Tupac Shakur before he burst on the scene, DMX became one of the reigning stars of hardcore hip hop and was the premier artist signed to the Ruffhouse Records label.

His single, "Ruff Ryders Anthem," helped to seal his critical and commercial success.

The rapper released several albums over the years, including one of his most commercially successful, "...And Then There Was X," that was released in 1999 and was nominated for a Grammy in the best rap album category. It was one of three Grammy nominations for the rapper.

He sold millions of albums, boosted by hits like "Get At Me Dog" in 1998, "Party Up," in 1999 and "X Gon' Give It to Ya," in 2003.

He parlayed his growing fame into an acting career, appearing in multiple films including, "Romeo Must Die" and "Cradle 2 The Grave."

His professional achievements were often overshadowed by his issues with substance abuse and run-ins with the law. He pleaded guilty to tax fraud in 2017 and was sentenced to one year in prison.

In 2019, DMX canceled a planned concert tour to seek treatment for addiction, saying at the time that he was "putting family and sobriety first."

That same year he talked to GQ about his struggles.

"I just need to have a purpose," he said. "And I don't even know that purpose, because God has given me that purpose since before I was in the womb, so I'm going to fulfill that purpose ... whether I want to or not, whether I know it or not, because the story has already been written. If you appreciate the good, then you have to accept the bad."

More recently, DMX thrilled fans last year when he appeared in a Verzuz battle with fellow artist Snoop Dogg.

Nigerian Beauty Queen Najeebat Sule 'Najee' Shot Dead In The U.S (Photos)

Nigerian beauty queen PhD student, 24, is shot dead sitting in her car outside her home in Philadelphia - as homicides spike 28 per cent in City of Brotherly Love

A former Nigerian beauty queen and doctoral student in Philadelphia has been shot dead while sitting in her car in front of her family's home, and now her parents are hiding out of fear for their lives.

Najeebat Sule, 24, known to her loved ones as Najee, was killed shortly before 6pm on March 12, steps away from her residence in the 8800 block of Frankford Avenue.

Nearly three weeks later, police have not found a motive and have made no arrests, leaving Sule's family and friends searching for answers. She had only recently earned a Master's degree in public health.

Magaji was among the last people to have seen Sule alive before she was gunned down. The two women had spent the night before at Magaji's home, eating snacks and watching Netflix together.

Less than 24 hours later, Sule was sitting in her grey Toyota Corolla, exchanging text messages with Magaji, when an unidentified man walked up to the vehicle with a gun drawn and shot her several times. .

Sule's father, Adewale Sule, heard the gunfire and emerged from the house just in time to see the suspect fire the last of the shots at his daughter. “I saw the guy shooting my daughter. He shot the last round, and I pursued him. He ran back to his car,” said the father.

Najeet was rushed to Jefferson Torresdale Hospital, where she was pronounced dead about 30 minutes later. Her mother, Tawakalitu Sule, said she last heard from Najeet less than two hours before the shooting when her daughter asked her when she would be home.

Najeet is survived by her parents and two sisters. Sule had only recently earned a Master's degree in public health from West Chester University and was pursuing a doctorate. In 2019, she was crowned a second runner-up at the Miss Nigeria International pageant.

Sule's shooting death comes amid a surge in gun violence in Philadelphia, which has seen a 29 per cent homicide rate increase over the last year. Sule is among 120 people who have been killed in Philadelphia so far this year according to Fox29.

Hong Kong media tycoon Jimmy Lai Chee-ying and six former opposition lawmakers have been convicted of organising and taking part in an unauthorised anti-government protest in 2019

Seven pro-democracy advocates were convicted Thursday for organizing and participating in an unlawful assembly during massive anti-government protests in 2019, as Hong Kong continues its crackdown on dissent.

The seven activists include media tycoon and founder of the Apple Daily tabloid Jimmy Lai, as well as 82-year-old Martin Lee, a veteran of the city’s democracy movement. Lai had already held without bail on other charges related to his pro-democracy activities.

The group of activists were convicted for their involvement in a protest held on Aug. 18, 2019. Organizers of the protest say that 1.7 million people marched that day in protest of a proposed bill that would have allowed criminal suspects to be extradited to mainland China for trial.

Ahead of the trial, supporters and some of the defendants gathered outside court, shouting slogans like “Oppose political persecution” and “Five demands, not one less," in reference to demands by pro-democracy supporters that include amnesty for those arrested in the protests as well as universal suffrage.

“So on this day, in a very difficult situation in Hong Kong, political retaliation is on us,” said Lee Cheuk-yan, one of the defendants ahead of the court session.

“We will still march on no matter what lies in the future. We believe in the people of Hong Kong, in our brothers and sisters in our struggle, and the victory is ours if the people of Hong Kong are persistent,” he said.

Hong Kong was rocked by months of protests in the second half of 2019, sparked by the extradition bill. The bill was eventually withdrawn, but the protests expanded to include full democracy and other demands and at times descended into violence between protesters and police.

In the aftermath of the protests, Beijing has taken a tougher stance on dissent, implementing a national security law on Hong Kong and approving electoral reforms that would reduce the public’s role in voting in lawmakers for the city’s legislature.

Taking part in an unlawful assembly or a riot in Hong Kong can result in a maximum sentence of up to 10 years imprisonment for serious offenses.

Veteran Nollywood Actors Pete Edochie Shun Feminism -Feminism has no place in our culture he Said

Veteran Nollywood actor, Pete Edochie, has said feminism should be held responsible for the domestic violence women suffer in marriage.

The actor told BBC Igbo that modern women lack a basic skill like cooking to keep their husbands happy, adding that women are usually to blame for cases of domestic violence.

He noted that any woman who cannot cook has lost the right to refer to herself as a woman.

He said, "Feminism isn’t something black people are known for. Once a woman leaves her parents to meet her husband and takes his surname, she is to be submissive to him. If she wasn’t married, she can do whatever she wants.

"Women walk and show off their behinds, it’s so that men would find them. If you see such a woman and express your marriage interest, then she starts walking properly. Our women now plunge into feminism nowadays.

“They can’t even keep their husbands anymore. Is that a good thing? These women are schooled but a lot of wives now can’t even cook — one thing that a woman should be good in so as to be able to keep her husband.

“My mother was not educated but she would cook all sorts of soups, including bitter leaf, Oha, Ogbono, Okro, Egusi, Ukwa, and what have you. My father would always get back home hurriedly to eat what his wife had cooked.

“Today, our wives can’t even cook anymore. Women who can’t cook aren’t supposed to call themselves women. And feminism is what causes women to be beaten up in marriages. You complain to a woman and she retorts.

"It becomes unbearable, so you stretch your arm and deal her a slap. Domestic violence starts. I don’t like seeing women crying because it hurts me deeply. But it is the fault of the woman herself a lot of times.”

According to Edochie, feminism has no place in Nigeria’s culture.

He continued, “To be honest, the understanding of women is low. I’m not a misogynist but I’ve associated with them a lot, even at work. Feminism has no place in our culture. We don’t worship women as the whites do.

“In the west, women could join forces and accuse a male colleague of assault. The man resigns. This can’t happen in our culture. As a young woman, if pedestrians don’t admire you, you’d weep for fear of not being beautiful.

"I’m a strong adherent of culture. Kneeling to put a ring on a woman’s hands is not our culture. Any man who does that transfers the headship of his family to that woman. Until my dad died at 96, he never knelt to propose.

“It’s just like kneeling down on entering a church because there’s a higher being to whom you’re paying respect. Men climb trees to tap palm wine. How does it look if women do the same? Today women dictate to men.

“It wasn’t like that in our days. How women talk to men nowadays isn’t how we were raised. My mother was never beaten. My wife and I have been married for 52 years. I never beat her. My five married sons don’t beat their wives.”

Nigeria Idol Season 6 Kicks-off

A total of 25 contestants made it to the first day of the auditions with the judges as the sixth season of Nigerian Idol kicked off.

The lucky contestants that made it in, came from various walks of life. From fashion designers to lawyers, entrepreneurs, comedians, and even professional musicians.

13 out of the 25 lucky contestants that auditioned in the first episode got golden tickets to proceed to the next round, the theatre week, where they will battle against each other to make it to the next stage.

 The Judges

From the start, the judges – Obi Asika, Seyi Shay, and DJ Sose – had their work cut out for them. Obi Asika was calm and introspective and DJ Sose’s poker face scared many of the contestants. However, it was Seyi Shay’s blunt judgments and giggles that haunted the contestants.

The performances

After the first six contestants breezed out of the doors with their golden tickets, things went downhill from there. Each contestant that came up afterward did not live up to the judges’ expectations including Azubuike Uzoepu who claimed to have performed with the legendary 2baba at a Fashion Show in Onitsha; and Michael Macauley, a professional musician that came on the show to promote his recently released EP. The most impressive performances of the first day came from two fashion designers who got golden tickets. 30-year-old Azigalobari and 23-year-old Faith Mac, the younger sister of former 2011 Nigerian Idol finalist Naomi Mac had the most impressive performances.

The Drama

While some people got sympathetic ‘Nos’ and admonishments to come back next year, 17-year-old Mayowa was advised to just quit music. He was however praised for his songwriting skills.

A contestant, Chigozie Oleka, who was nervous after receiving a negative response from the judges kept pleading for another chance or consideration. A mild drama ensued as Oleka’s subsequent pleas saw DJ Sose storming out of the set.

Nollywood Actress And Movie Producer, Ruth Kadiri Ezerika Is Celebrating Her 33rd Birthday With Stunning Outfits

Nollywood actress and movie producer, Ruth Kadiri Ezerika is celebrating her 33rd birthday with stunning outfits.

Sharing her birthday pictures on Instagram, the mother of one, Mrs Ezerika wrote:

With a great full heart I lift my voice to you. Thank you for bringing me this far and thank you for where you’re taking me to. HAPPY BIRTHDAY to Me.

Ruth Kadiri was born in Benin City, Edo State, Nigeria. She studied mass communication at the University of Lagos and business administration at Yaba College of Technology.

Nigeria Afrobeats stars Burna Boy and Wizkid have won at the 2021 Grammys.

Nigeria Afrobeats stars Burna Boy and Wizkid have won at the 2021 Grammys.

Burna Boy won the Best Global Music Album category while Wizkid won the Best Music Video for his song with Beyoncé; Brown Skin Girl, from Lion King: The Gift album.

Beyoncé's daughter Blue Ivy was also a winner on the song.

Burna Boy, real name Damini Ogulu, a nominee for a second consecutive year, won with his Twice As Tall album.

The 29-year-old beat four others including the Malian band, Tinariwen.

The Grammys described Twice As Tall as "a masterclass in the vibe and hustle that have made Burna Boy an international musical force".

"[He] continues to torch limitations, seamlessly blending styles and genres and fearlessly fuelling the fire heating the melting pot of pop, Afrobeat, dancehall, reggae and more," it said.

The album features a wide range of international artists such as Stormzy, Youssou Ndour, Naughty By Nature, and Chris Martin of Coldplay, and had Sean Combs as executive producer.

Second time lucky

Burna Boy was nominated in the same category in 2019 - then known as Best World Music Album - but lost out to Angelique Kidjo at the awards ceremony in 2020.

However, Kidjo dedicated her win to him, saying: "Burna Boy is among those young artists that come from Africa that is changing the way our continent is perceived and the way that African music is the bedrock of all music."

Born in Nigeria's Port Harcourt, Burna Boy released his first album, LIFE, an acronym for Leaving an Impact For Eternity, in 2013.

That album was followed by the release of Redemption in 2015 and Outside in 2018 that included the international hit track, Ye.

But it was with his 2019 African Giant album that Burna Boy really hit the international scene and earned his first Grammys nomination.

Often compared to Nigerian superstar Fela Ransome-Kuti, whose songs Burna has sampled generously, he has become increasingly vocal about social causes in Africa.

At the height of the xenophobic attacks in South Africa in 2019, he threatened to never set foot in the country again unless the government took action, although he has since performed in the country.

The serial entrepreneur recently had an encounter with a producer in Asaba, Delta State where she went for a shoot. According to her, she had to return to Lagos without playing a role simply because the producer demanded for sex.

Tonia narrated her experience to Inside Nollywood: “I’m not ready to sleep with any producer or director for a role. I was recently in Asaba for a movie shoot, but I had to come back to Lagos because the producer was demanding for sex. I felt bad and surprised.”

However, the thespian showered accolades on Nollywood for its landslide achievements. “Nollywood is doing well. The practitioners are doing what they really have to do and I respect each and every one of them,” she said.
