NDC General Secretary aspirant, Dr. Peter Boamah Otokunor, says the 2024 general elections is a liberation battle for Ghana and the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
According to him, both the people of Ghana and the NDC cannot afford to live under another term of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) thus the need to rescue Ghana.
He stated that to be able to achieve ‘liberation’, the NDC will need an able leader to steer the affairs of the party and come up with game-changing policies that will swing votes in the party’s favour during the 2024 elections.
Dr. Otonkunor has put himself forward as the strong and able leader capable of changing the NDC’s fate for the better.
Speaking on JoyNews’ PM Express, he said, “There are a thousand reasons why I want to become general secretary, but the most crucial one is that the NDC cannot afford an additional day of an NPP government or an Akufo-Addo government. Neither can the people of this country afford an additional day of an NPP government.
“And that requires that we have a strong leadership, a resolve driven leadership, leadership that understands how to win elections, leadership that understands the feeling of the people, the aspirations of the people that is ready to sacrifice, and if you want, do what it takes to win power for the people.”
He added, “Because I have said for example, the 2024 elections is a liberation battle and it will require all hands on deck, but most importantly, it will require an effective and strong leadership. And if you’re talking about strong and effective leadership then it also means that we must have a leader that is very courageous because you are dealing with the NPP that is not ready to let go of power easily.
“They are not going to sit down for you to take power from them just like that. It’s going to be a very tough tussle. They have said that they’re breaking the eight, they have said for example that they are going to handover to an NPP government, it means that they know exactly what they’re going to do. And history provides ample evidence to how these people operate.”
“So it means that we’d have to do extra, we’d have to work hard, we’d have to show resilience and tenacity in our effort to win power and that means the people will need a kind of leader who is courageous, who is fearless, who is bold and brave, who understands the rudiment of elections, who understands party management and above all is a grassroot man because you’ll need to consolidate the party, you’ll need to have an excited party grassroot that are ready to sacrifice, that are ready to commit.
“And the leader must be approachable because they must share your aspirations and difficulties and pain. You must be accessible, you must be their own. And all these attributes that the people need in a leader to lead them for 2024 elections is my scorecard. Because you’ll score me excellent on courage, you’ll score me excellent on fearlessness, you’ll score me excellent n braveness, you’ll score me excellent on boldness, you’ll score me excellent on my understanding of elections …” he said.
