Tourism in Kenya is the third largest contributor of income revenue |
The AfCFTA which 54 of the 55 African nations have signed onto, makes Africa the world’s largest free trade area since the formation of the World Trade Organisation, and will cover a market of 1.2 billion people. Currently, around 60% of Africa’s population is under 25 years old, and that grouping will account for twice Europe’s total population in 2100.
Africa is endowed with huge environmental assets, natural resources, and cultural heritage and, therefore, tourism has contributed greatly to the continent’s economic growth for the past decade.
According to the 2014 report of the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), Africa is one of the fastest growing bases for tourism sector globally, behind South-East Asia.

It is estimated that international tourism arrivals in Africa increased by 2% in 2014. The region maintained a 5% share in worldwide arrivals and a 3% share in tourism receipts. Africa received 56 million international tourists up from 26 million in 2000.
Travel and tourism direct GDP in Africa reached $83 billion in 2014. With nearly 9 million direct employees in the continent, travel and tourism is one of the leading employers, surpassing other sectors such as financial services, mining, banking, to mention a few
Some of the key area that would see a boost as a result of the implementation of the pact are the tourism and hospitality sectors.
Despite the obvious opportunities, many also speak of the growing size of the youth and how that will influence the employment dynamics on the continent.

The youth in Ghana and across the continent to position themselves for careers in the tourism value chain, ahead of the implementation of the Africa Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Agreement.
Feeding Africa’s growing and moving population is a huge challenge. So irrespective of whether you are starting your own small eatery or running from office to office to feed people there is a huge opportunity for young entrepreneurs. With a rapid growth in tourism and hospitality sector the career opportunities are endless.”
