Design and Display

The right side of the device features volume controls and power on/off button while on the left, there is dual-SIM and microSD card slot. The bottom panel of the phone has a micro USB port, a speaker grille, and a 3.5mm audio jack.

On the display front, you get a 6.26-inch HD+ display with 20 x 1520 pixels resolution, 19.5:9 aspect ratio and 500nit screen brightness. The viewing angles on the screen are satisfactory and in outdoor conditions, readability was not an issue. In bright sunlight, we were easily able to operate the phone. The Infinix S4 is quite lightweight at 155 grams and due to its compact size, it fits into the hand perfectly.

During our usage, we found the screen brightness is very impressive. The brightness is not harsh to stress your eyes and the auto brightness works very efficient to adjust with the environment. The screen brightness can also be controlled automatically. There is an eye care mode on the smartphone as well for a comfortable reading experience at night.

Hardware and Software

Infinix S4 features modest hardware. It is powered by an Octa-Core 2.0GHz, MediaTek Helio P22 chipset with PowerVR GE8320 GPU. It is backed up by a 3GB of RAM and 32GB of internal memory, which can be further expanded up to 256GB via microSD card slot. This octa-core mobile chipset is mediocre but it allows you to do all the day to day tasks with ease without many instances of lag.

A1 Engine on a smartphone

We didn’t face any issues with regular usage, even when engaging with multiple apps. We were able to open apps within 1-2 seconds of clicking. So as far as performance is concerned, we did not have any lag when using the smartphone, and it was capable of delivering a good experience.

Lighter games like Subway Surfers and Candy Crush ran smoothly on the Infinix S4 but it is not meant to tackle high-end games. So if you are a heavy game user, we would not advise you to go with this smartphone. Keeping in mind that it is a budget-centric smartphone, the performance is good.

For unlocking the phone, the company has provided a fingerprint scanner and face unlocking feature apart from regular pin pattern. We found the fingerprint sensor and face unlock feature quite fast and accurate for unlocking the device with no noticeable lags. Both the features unlock the phone in seconds. The fingerprint scanner also allows you to take photos, accept calls, browse through pictures, and dismiss alarms using gestures.

On the software side, the Infinix S4 runs on Android 9.0 Pie, which is based on the company’s custom UI XOS 5.0 on top of it. The user interface comes loaded with some good features. It features an app drawer where all the apps are sorted in alphanumeric order.

In terms of bloatware, the device comes with apps like XTheme, XClub, Phone Master, PHX Browser, Face Unlock, Flipkart, WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, Weather, Opera News and more. Out of them, one can delete just a few pre-loaded apps like Flipkart, Facebook, Opera News, and Whatsapp while company-owned apps like XTheme, XClub, Phone Master cannot be deleted.

The XTheme helps you with different themes, the XClub is a customer forum and the XHide is to hide pictures, videos. The Phone Master app lets you free up RAM to boost performance. The phone has different gestures such as a three-finger swipe to capture screenshots, flip the phone to mute incoming calls and a double-tap to wake the screen. There is also smart panel available on the device’s home screen side which gives you easier access to some functions. It can be used to store your most favourite apps or games as it can be customized according to your choice.

Camera

Now coming to the device's other USP, the camera. The Infinix S4 is equipped with a triple rear camera setup with a combination of a primary 13-megapixel snapper with f/1.8 aperture, an 8-megapixel 120 degrees ultra-wide camera with f/2.2 aperture, and a 2-megapixel camera as well. The rear setup is accompanied by a Quad-LED flash. Up front, the Infinix S4 has a 32-megapixel selfie camera with f/2.0 aperture and screen flash. Both the front and rear camera support video up to 1080p.

The camera UI in the phone is pretty simple and you get different options like video, AI cam, beauty, bokeh, and AR shot where users can click fun images with some masks that are preloaded in the smartphone. The AI cam allows the camera to automatically adjust the settings for a perfect shot in different lighting conditions and subject movement. In the settings, you can also do various tasks like tagging your location to an image, delaying the capture, among others. For the selfie camera, it has multiple features like video, HDR, Flash, Portrait mode, beauty, and AR shot.

The rear camera does a decent enough job for this price, and capture objects clearly enough. Daylight shots were above average with good clarity and overall colour reproduction. The phone does an excellent job of capturing macro shots as well as the detailing. Even the autofocus is fast. The wide-angle lens will also not disappoint you. The low-light camera performance of the Infinix S4 was average. When pictures were taken in low-light, they appear to be grainy with some noise. Objects at a distance weren't very recognisable, but this is acceptable at this price. The bokeh mode lets you take photos by blurring out the background and highlighting the subject in the image. However, you may notice that the edge-detection isn’t that great in this mode. You can also control the background blur for a perfect bokeh shot.

Battery and Connectivity

The Infinix S4 has a 4000mAh battery which will easily last for a full day even through heavy usage. Our usage included some calls, checking e-mails, frequently checking social media accounts of Facebook and Instagram, watching movies and checking websites. In our reviewing period, we did not notice any excessive drainage of battery even while playing games. The battery will easily last a day and a half with light usage. There is no fast charging support in the device, so the phone takes its own time to charge. It takes around than 3 hours to fully charge the phone from zero to 100 percent.

On the connectivity front, the smartphone supports dual 4G VoLTE, WiFi, GPS/AGPS, Bluetooth 5.0, 3.5 mm audio jack, FM radio, and micro USB port. The phone measures 156 x 75 x 7.9 mm.

Infinix S4 has face unlock, fingerprint scanner, a triple camera module, 32MP selfie camera, long-lasting battery and a vibrant display at just GH₵ 685 in Ghana and ₦ 44,990 in Nigeria is really a bargain.
