A planned peaceful protest by hundreds of aggrieved law students on Monday, October 7, turned violent following a disagreement over the route for the demonstration.

The protest which started from the Ghana School of Law was expected to end at the Jubilee House where they were to present a petition to President Akufo-Addo to push for reforms in Ghana’s legal education system.

But the Police stopped them at the Ako-Adjei Interchange, preventing them from getting close to the seat of government; leading to a clash between them.

The Police then fired rubber bullets and showered the protestors with water from their cannons.

The Police subsequently arrested 13 of the protestors, while some sort refuge at the Canadian Embassy.

Speaking on Accra-based Citi FM, the Deputy Accra Regional Public Relations Officer, Inspector Kwabena Danso said the protest was illegal.

According to him, the Regional Command after receiving notice of the protest invited the leadership to a meeting to discuss the best route for the protest but they failed to turn up.

He said the 13 who were arrested have been charged for breaching public peace and unlawful demonstration
