In Ghana, the ECG, the national electric company, has instructed its electric stations to acquire only cables made in the country. According to Kwame Agyeman-Budu, the executive director of the company, this policy was established after the observation that the cables were imported especially from China.

This new policy, he says, will create more jobs in the country while encouraging the local industry of manufacturing said cables. In the past few years, some manufacturers, overtaken by external competition, had started to offer imported cables.

“The idea is to agree with the country’s local consumption policy. We also want to make sure that local companies have the capacity to supply equipment to the ECG, ” said the manager after a visit to Tropical Cable and Conductor Ltd.

“We have the capacity to produce for the ECG. We have a lot of unused capacity, ” said Tony Oteng-Gyasi, executive director of Tropical Cables and Conductor.
