The number of people diagnosed in Egypt as carriers of the SARS-CoV-2 amounted to 4,992, while the death toll added up to 294, the Ministry of Health reported on Friday in its daily briefing on the epidemiological situation.
In order to contain the spread of the virus, the Egyptian government has suspended international flights, and closed schools, universities, museums, tourist facilities and archaeological sites.
For several weeks, a night curfew has been in force, generally accepted by the citizens.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Endowments - which rules Islamic affairs - ordered the temporary closure of the numerous mosques of Egypt, where some 100 million inhabitants live, mostly Sunni Muslims. In addition, it banned all religious celebrations such as Ramadan.
Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly announced that the government plans to gradually ease restrictions in late May, but warned that if an outbreak of infections occurs, he will have to adopt stricter provisions.
According to expert assessments, the daily infected figure should be kept below 300 patients in order to be considered within an acceptable range.
