Mozambique may use Madagascar’s medicine to treat Covid-19 – reports

The Ministry of Health says that if the scientific effectiveness of the treatment which Madagascar is administering in coronavirus cases proves effective, Mozambique may use the same medication, Carta de Moçambique and Radio Mozambique both report today.

The National Director of Public Health, Rosa Marlene, said on Tuesday that Mozambique was currently waiting for the results of tests being conducted to ascertain the effectiveness of the medication.

Mozambique is waiting for scientific confirmation from the World Health Organization (WHO) before using a Malagasy herbal tea in the treatment of patients with Covid-19. Covid-Organics, a beverage developed by the Malagasy Institute of Applied Research (IMRA), is made from the Artemisia plant – which has proven effectiveness in the treatment of malaria – and other local herbs.

According to the Malagasy president, Covid-Organics has already cured two people there, and he has recommended that it be distributed to school children. “This herbal tea gives results in seven days. I will be the first to drink this today, in front of you, to show that this product cures and does not kill,” Rajoelina said at the presentation.

“Covid-Organics will be used as prophylaxis, that is, for prevention, but clinical observations show it tends to be effective in curative treatment,” IMRA president Charles Andrianjara said at the launch.

Asked this Tuesday by ‘Carta de Moçambique’ if Mozambique was going to request Covid-Organics to test on patients with Covid-19 in Mozambique, the National Director of Public Health, Rosa Marlene, replied: “it needs a little more scientific evidence. We are doing a segment, and we hope to have an orientation to share the scientific results of this medicine. Obviously, if it proves to be effective against Covid-19, we will be the first to use it.”

As of last Tuesday, Madagascar had 128 confirmed cases of Covid-19, of which 82 were reported to have fully recovered, leaving the country with 46 active cases. No fatalities have yet been recorded, and authorities in Madagascar on Wednesday authorised the reopening of schools.

So far, a cure for Covid-19 is yet to be found, but health authorities have administered chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine, two drugs that seemingly have a beneficial effect on patients. Chloroquine has been used for decades to treat malaria, a fact that fuels the expectations that Covid-Organics may be effective in treating Covid-19.

Senegal became the first country to acquire the Malagasy medicine, followed by Guinea-Bissau. “Africa acts and protects itself against Covid-19. I thank President Macky Sall for his exchange (of opinions) and his confidence. Long live Africa and long live the natural wealth!” Rajoelina enthused on his official Twitter account.

Mozambique currently has 76 positive cases of Covid-19, nine of which have recovered. Worldwide, the disease has infected more than three million people, of whom more than 213,000 have lost their lives.

The pandemic has triggered a rush for herbal formulas, including lemons and ginger, in the belief that they can protect against the virus.

The World Health Organisation (WHO), which advises people to be vigilant about claimed cures for COVID-19, did not attend the Madagascar event.

Regarding claims made for herbal remedies, the US Centres for Disease Control (CDC), says: “There is no scientific evidence that any of these alternative remedies can prevent or cure the illness caused by Covid-19. In fact, some of them may not be safe to consume.”
