Ghana extends ban on social gatherings till 31st May

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo

President Akufo-Addo has announced the extension of the ban on social gatherings to combat the spread of the Coronavirus disease to the end of May, 2020.

He says even though the measures taken since Ghana recorded her first two cases have caused considerable suffering and discomfort, it is still vital to continue to observe the social distancing protocols as they are essential for a quick return to normalcy.

President Akufo-Addo who announced the extension Sunday night, in his 9th address on measures taken to combat the spread of the pandemic, and said we have no option but to stay the course if we are to win the fight against the disease.

"In my address to workers and the nation on May Day, I announced the extension of the closure of our borders for one more month as the means to continue halting the importation of the virus into our country. Tonight, I have come into your homes to announce that the ban on public gatherings, as set out in E.I 64, has been extended also to the end of the month, i.e. 31st May. So, during this period, there will continue to be a ban on public gatherings, such as the holding of conferences, workshops, parties, nightclubs, drinking spots, beaches, festivals, political rallies, religious activities and sporting events. All educational facilities, private and public, continue to remain closed. There is still a ban on funerals, other than private burials conducted with not more than twenty-five (25) persons."

He said Ghana’s case count as at Sunday, May 10, 2020, stood at 4,700 confirmed cases, out of which 497 have recovered with the number of deaths at 22 and five persons critically ill. All these have come from 160,501 tests.

President Akufo-Addo extolled Ghana’s testing regime, describing it as aggressive, which he said has ensured that carriers of the virus are identified early enough for isolation and treatment and which explains Ghana’s relatively low fatalities.

The alternative, he explained, would have been that about a third of the cases would have gone unnoticed early enough for timely management.

He assured that Ghana now reports current updates, having cleared all backlog of samples, and which data also points to the number of new infections slowing.
