"I think they should just sack him," Carragher told Sky Sports News.
"Or they should move him on, whether that's giving him a free transfer.
"At the moment, they're trying to build something that's not ready to win the Premier League or the Champions League right now, but they've got a manager who in the next two or three years is going to want to win those honours and Ronaldo is not going to be around."
"He's going to be a distraction, this is not going to go away, and as soon as a player says they don't respect the manager, I mean how is that going to work? It can't work going forward."
