The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) is alerting the public to the circulation of falsified Type 1 and Type 2 batches of POSTINOR-2 (Levonorgestrel 0.75mg) emergency contraceptive tablets.
A report from the Marketing Authorisation Holder, @SFHNigeria, confirms that the implicated batches were not imported by them, raising serious concerns about their authenticity and safety.
🔍 How to Spot the Fake Product
Consumers are urged to carefully inspect packaging for the following signs of falsification:
- PIN Verification Sticker:
- Fake: Smaller font size and misspelling of “Verify” as “Veify”
- Genuine: Larger, clearer font with correct spelling
- Packaging Text:
- Fake: “Distributed in Nigeria” is incorrectly spelled as “Distnibuted in Nigeria”
- Genuine: Correct spelling and professional formatting
⚠️ Health Risks and Safety Concerns
Falsified POSTINOR-2 may contain:
- Harmful or substandard ingredients
- Incorrect dosages of levonorgestrel
- Contaminants from unsafe manufacturing practices
These pose serious health risks, including:
- Contraceptive failure
- Toxic contamination
- Unpredictable side effects
- Delayed access to genuine emergency contraception
- Long-term reproductive health complications
Counterfeit medicines may also contain unknown substances that can trigger allergic reactions, cause organ damage, or even result in death.
