Dasuki Raises Alarm: Gazetted Tax Laws Differ from What National Assembly Passed

On Wednesday, Hon. Abdulsammad Dasuki (PDP, Sokoto) raised a matter of privilege on the floor of the House of Representatives, alleging serious discrepancies between tax laws passed by the National Assembly and the versions later gazetted for public use.

Dasuki explained that after carefully reviewing the gazetted copies against the Votes and Proceedings of the House and the harmonised versions adopted by both chambers, he discovered inconsistencies. He stressed that this amounted to a breach of legislative process and the Constitution, warning that such discrepancies undermine the integrity of the legislature and erode public trust.

He urged Speaker Abbas Tajudeen to ensure that all relevant documents—including the harmonised versions, Votes and Proceedings, and gazetted copies—be scrutinised by the Committee of the Whole. The Speaker acknowledged the concern and assured that action would be taken.

This development raises critical questions about transparency, accountability, and the sanctity of Nigeria’s lawmaking process. Citizens will be watching closely to see if the legislature can safeguard its credibility and uphold constitutional order.
