Angelique Kidjo Beats Burna Boy To Win Best World Music Album Category At Grammy Awards 2020

Beninese singer and songwriter, Angelique Kidjo, on Sunday, emerged the winner of the Best World Music Album at the 62nd Grammy Awards, at the Staples Centre, Los Angeles.

She beat Nigeria’s Damini Ebunoluwa Ogulu popularly known as Burna Boy and three other nominees to win the Grammy Award.

The Grammy Award for Best World Music Album is an award presented to recording artists for quality albums in the world music genre.This is Angelique Kidjo‘s fourth Grammy win in nine nominations, first of those nominations came in 1995.

Her first Grammy win was in 2007 when she won the Best Contemporary World Music category.

She also won a Grammy in 2014 for the Best World Music Album category with album eve and in 2015 for the albums, sings.

All nominees in the World Music category are Angelique Kidjo ‘Celia’s, Burna Boy ‘African Giant’ Altin Gun ‘Gece’, Bokante & Metropole Orkest conducted by Jules Buckley ‘What Heat’, and Nathalie Joachim with Spektral Quartet, Fanm D’Ayiti’.

However, in her acceptance speech, Angelique Kidjo dedicated her award to Burna boy.

“This is for Burna Boy,” she said, “declaring the “African Giant” as part of the new generation of African musicians that are changing the global perception of Africa and its music.

“The new generation of artists coming from Africa are going to take you by storm and the time has come.”
