Ghana president emerges party candidate, to face Mahama again

Foreign retailers to petition the President, Nana Akufo-Addo

Ghana’s ruling, New Patriotic Party, has picked incumbent President Nana Akufo-Addo as its candidate in the forthcoming presidential election, setting up a third consecutive head-to-head battle against former President John Mahama.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that 76-year-old Akufo-Addo unseated Mahama in 2016 with 53.8 per cent of the votes, cementing the gold and cocoa-producing West African nation’s reputation as a leading democracy in a region that has earned notoriety for political instability.

The NPP, in a statement on Saturday, said Akufo-Addo would contest the December 7 poll with Vice-President Mahamudu Bawumia as his running mate.

Mahama, 61, who has been chosen by the National Democratic Congress as its candidate, defeated Akufo-Addo in the 2012 presidential race before serving as Ghana’s Commander-in-Chief from 2012 to 2017.
