Time for Accountability: Confronting Religious Persecution in Nigeria

The recent seizure of Kirawa, a border town in Nigeria’s Borno State, by Boko Haram militants has once again exposed the brutal reality of religious persecution and unchecked violence in the region. According to Reuters, more than 5,000 people fled into neighboring Cameroon after insurgents torched homes, military barracks, and the palace of the district head, Abdulrahman Abubakar.
This is not an isolated incident. For years, Islamist jihadist groups like Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) have waged a relentless campaign of terror against Christian communities and other civilians in Nigeria’s northeast. What’s even more disturbing is the growing evidence that some officials within Nigeria are not only ignoring these atrocities they may be enabling them.

That’s why I am introducing the Nigeria Religious Freedom Accountability Act a legislative initiative designed to target complicit officials with powerful sanctions and diplomatic tools. This act will send a clear message: the international community will not stand by while religious minorities are slaughtered and their rights trampled.
The bill aims to:
• Impose targeted sanctions on Nigerian officials who facilitate or ignore religious persecution.
• Restrict access to U.S. visas and financial systems for those found complicit.
• Mandate regular reporting on religious freedom violations in Nigeria.
• Support civil society and faith-based organizations working to protect vulnerable communities.
We must move beyond words and take decisive action. The world cannot afford to turn a blind eye to the suffering of thousands who are displaced, traumatized, and silenced. Justice demands more than sympathy it demands accountability.
