In a recent Presidential Media Encounter, President John Dramani Mahama reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to regional solidarity and humanitarian cooperation by facilitating the repatriation of West African nationals deported from the United States.
President Mahama disclosed that Ghana had already assisted in the return of several Nigerian nationals by bus, while arrangements were still underway to support the repatriation of a Gambian national. This effort stems from an agreement between Ghana and the United States, allowing the return of third-party nationals specifically from West Africa through Ghanaian territory.
The President confirmed that the agreement had been activated, with the first batch of fourteen individuals arriving in Ghana. Among them were several Nigerian nationals, whom Ghana promptly assisted in returning to their home country.
This move underscores Ghana’s role as a stabilizing force in the sub-region, demonstrating both logistical capability and diplomatic goodwill. It also highlights the importance of regional mobility and cooperation under ECOWAS protocols, which allow visa-free travel among member states.
