Liverpool Smash British Transfer Record to Sign Alexander Isak

September 1, 2025 — Anfield, England
In a dramatic deadline-day twist, Liverpool Football Club have agreed a British-record transfer fee of £125 million to sign Swedish striker Alexander Isak from Newcastle United. With add-ons, the deal could rise to £130 million, making it one of the most expensive transfers in football history.
Isak, 25, is expected to undergo a medical today before signing a six-year contract with the reigning Premier League champions. The move ends a tense summer saga that saw Liverpool’s initial £110 million bid rejected in August, and Isak training alone at his former club Real Sociedad amid growing frustration.
From Tyneside to Merseyside
Isak joined Newcastle in 2022 for £60 million and quickly became a fan favorite, scoring 27 goals in 42 appearances last season. He played a pivotal role in Newcastle’s Carabao Cup triumph, ironically scoring against Liverpool in the final, and helped the Magpies secure a fifth-place finish and Champions League qualification.
However, tensions flared this summer when Isak was omitted from Newcastle’s pre-season tour due to a “minor thigh injury.” Behind the scenes, the striker reportedly felt promises had been broken regarding his future, prompting a public statement that their “relationship can’t continue”.
Liverpool’s Record-Breaking Summer
Isak’s arrival caps off a blockbuster summer for Liverpool under new manager Arne Slot. The club had already shattered its own transfer record by signing German playmaker Florian Wirtz for £100 million, with £16 million in potential add-ons. Other high-profile arrivals include Hugo Ekitike, Jeremie Frimpong, Milos Kerkez, Giorgi Mamardashvili, Armin Pecsi, and Giovanni Leoni, bringing total spending to £416 million, excluding bonuses.
The Reds are also pursuing a deal for England defender Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace, signaling that their transfer spree may not be over just yet.
Departures and Financial Balance
To offset their spending, Liverpool have recouped approximately £190 million from the sales of Luis Diaz, Darwin Nunez, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Jarell Quansah, Caoimhin Kelleher, Tyler Morton, and Ben Doak.
Where Does Isak’s Fee Rank?
Isak’s transfer now tops the British charts, surpassing Chelsea’s £107 million signing of Enzo Fernandez in 2023. Globally, it ranks third behind PSG’s acquisitions of Neymar (£200m) and Kylian Mbappé (£165.7m). It also eclipses deals for Philippe Coutinho and Ousmane Dembélé, whose moves to Barcelona were valued at £142m and £135.5m respectively.
What’s Next?
With Liverpool leading the Premier League table and preparing for a post-international break clash against Burnley, fans are eagerly anticipating Isak’s debut. If all goes smoothly, the Swedish star could be unveiled tonight—just hours before the transfer window slams shut.
